Self Portrait

April 1, 2017 ASAA

(1st Place (Tie) – Drawing)
Congressional Award Winner

Title of Art Piece: Self Portrait
Category: Drawing – 2017
Student/Artist’s Name: Abigail Veliz-Magana
School: Eagle River High School
Grade: 9th
Artist Statement:

For this piece, I really tried to show off my skill in drawing detail and showing value. Overall, I wanted the image to “pop”. The glasses were probably the most difficult, but I believe I executed it successfully.

Good Things Age Like Fine Wine

April 2, 2017 ASAA

(2nd Place – Drawing)

Title of Art Piece: Good Things Age Like Fine Wine
Category: Drawing – 2017
Student/Artist’s Name: Nichole Bearden
School: Eagle River High School
Grade: 12th
Artist Statement:

My piece, “Good Things Age Like Fine Wine,” is one of many in a central theme I am exploring through my studio art course. This image is a part of a series that exposes the elderly. Because our society idealizes youth and beauty and physical hard work, they are an important demographic that often go ignored, due to their inability to provide the aforementioned. The figures in my piece are engaged in a passionate kiss, seemingly atypical of their age. Their zeal and desperation, expressed primarily by the man who is clutching the woman’s face with his hand, resembles that of teenagers blinded by love or lust. Additionally, the image is rendered entirely with charcoal, whose textured and soft appearance aid in the composition of the subject matter.

beer.

April 10, 2017 ASAA

Title of Art Piece: beer.
Category: Drawing – 2017
Student/Artist’s Name: Brekken Cogswell
School: Eagle River High School
Grade: 12th
Artist Statement:

My piece, titled simply “beer.”, is part of a series I’m currently working on exploring what a drink can mean to a person or a culture. “beer.” displays the emotions of those seemingly trapped in the grasp of alcohol. The foreground of the composition is a large bottle containing multiple beings malcontent with their surroundings while the background is littered with the remnants of a broken bottle. Shattered through unknown circumstances, the background represents either the escape of formally encased beings or the inevitable collapse resulting from the abuse of alcohol. The use of crosshatching by ink sharpens the piece to illustrate the unforgiving nature of alcoholism.

Memories Dock

April 10, 2017 ASAA

Title of Art Piece: Memories Dock
Category: Painting – 2017
Student/Artist’s Name: Jason Johnson
School: Eagle River High School
Grade: 12th
Artist Statement:

For me, most of my life has been around water, docks and greenery. This painting represents the nostalgia, the history and the appreciation of my lifes past. Sketching a few drafts on a piece of paper to get the perspective right was how I approached the painting, then using water soluble oils to paint a light sketch on the canvas with a light grey color made out of blue and brown colors. All of the colors were mixed not using one color straight out of the tube in order to really capture the unique colors in the scene. I tried to avoid using black or at least use it as little as possible with the exception of the dock. As a substitute, I used a very dark purple. To create the darker values of colors I would use their contrast to really give variety to the colors as to not make the natural beauty of nature seem common, but give it a sort of individuality to each color and paint. Throughout the time it took to paint the scene I tried to make it look like something that would give people a feeling of comfort and peace, like you would if you went hiking or getting ready to go out on water. I am very glad I found a scene that could follow my vision, and I feel I captured the nostalgic feeling well. When I look at this painting I feel like I could have possibly been there or even go there. It is a good representation of where I’ve been, and where I just might go.
