Underwater Cactus Flower

April 10, 2017 ASAA

Title of Art Piece: Underwater Cactus Flower
Category: Ceramics – 2017
Student/Artist’s Name: Jordan Semeniuk
School: Dimond High School
Grade: 10th
Artist Statement:

I was just playing around with shapes and textures, and then I made a shape that looked like a cactus flower and I really liked what I had created. So I decided to add it onto my piece, along with 2 other flowers. Then I took a look at it and decided it just wasn’t good enough. Like it was missing something. So I created some barnacle-looking things and put swirls around them. But that STILL wasn’t enough. So I added some bigger swirls in the spaces that were open. It turned out to look like some organism was growing and almost blooming on my piece and I thought it completed it perfectly.

Although this was an Art 1 project, I took the opportunity to preserve and celebrate a good memory of a great hike into our local Alaska range. I wanted to do justice to the colors and textures I observed, so I applied my brushwork and mixed the color schemes from the photo taken at the time.
