(3rd Place – Painting)
Title of Art Piece: Pearl in the Ocean
Student/Artist’s Name: Amber Vernon
School: Unalaska City School
Artist Statement: I made this piece at an art camp I attended during this summer. This was my “Choice” project during the class, so I decided to experiment with watercolors. I love painting octopi because their tentacles can be painted anyway you want them to be. There is no wrong way to paint them. For the background I used a kind of blotching technique where I would get one spot wet with paint, sprinkle some salt in it, then wait till it dried to make more blotches. The octopus and the background are made of watercolor. I used acrylic for the suckers because I felt like it would make them pop out more. I painted this piece on a 22”x30” piece of 300 lb. Arches watercolor paper.
