Identity Erasure

April 18, 2019 ASAA

(2nd Place – Sculpture)

Title of Art Piece: Identity Erasure
Category: Sculpture – 2019
Student/Artist’s Name: Summer McGuire
School: Homer High School
Grade: 12th
Artist Statement:

I was inspired by Greek and Roman style sculpture, specifically busts, and I created my own with slab and pinching techniques. The completely hollow bust is of a matriarchal Indigenous American character. She is dressed in robes and styled like a Greek/Roman woman, but her irritated and uncomfortable experience speaks that this is not her choice. The white glaze poured over her signifies “White Washing” of indigenous culture, and of people’s identities. I hope to make a statement about the injustice that lies in forcing one’s culture on another.
