Civil Unrest

Title of Art Piece: Civil Unrest
Category: Mixed Media
Student/Artist’s Name: Trinity Olsen-Benton
School: Kodiak High School
Grade: 12th

Artist Statement: This art piece reflects the biblical story of David and Goliath and present issues between my generation and the government. By placing patriotic analogies along with the well-known bible story, my piece speaks for itself. The words “Oh say, Can you see?” along with the “purple mountain majesty” show the traditional American culture with a flag replacing the sky. In contrast, the unfruitful dirt lot contained by a fence presents a battle field in which David, pictured as a young rebel, prepares his sling shot to face today’s Goliath, “the man”. The sheep represent the idea that most people are being “herded” by whoever has control, and Goliath’s suit being made out of cash represents what gives him control. Every element in my artwork holds meaning because I wanted people to see what I see in a literal sense.
