Dionaea Muscipula and Friends

April 1, 2018 ASAA

(1st Place – Textile/Fiber Design)

Title of Art Piece: Dionaea Muscipula and Friends
Category: Textile/Fiber Design – 2018
Student/Artist’s Name: Keriakia Hammer
School: Service High School
Grade: 10th
Artist Statement:

Given the subject of organic matter, I chose these specific plants to batik because although they may be beautiful, they are not commonly affiliated with the habitual subject found among artists of a decorous and innocuous composition filled with roses or daisies. Overall my goal with this piece was to show people something different that is both aesthetic but not customarily regarded as such.

Poppy Field

(2nd Place – Textile/Fiber Design)

Title of Art Piece: Poppy Field
Category: Textile/Fiber Design – 2018
Student/Artist’s Name: Nathan Jones
School: Service High School
Grade: 10th
Artist Statement:

I enjoy art for about the same reason I enjoy films and books so much; because it provides an interesting perspective on certain topics, allows the creator to express themselves, and because they can look really cool. I don’t think this piece means much at all, I just wanted to see if I could accomplish the same transparency/depth effects from watercolor landscapes with the batik process. But art in general means a lot to me, because I enjoy the feeling of artistic freedom and the ability to express myself in any way i choose; the same way any director or writer feels. I think that creating is just part of human nature, whether it be a story, a person, or a painting of a bunch of flowers in an open field.

Modern Mermaid

April 6, 2018 ASAA

Title of Art Piece: Modern Mermaid
Category: Textile/Fiber Design – 2018
Student/Artist’s Name: Sabrina Urban
School: Service High
Grade: 11th
Artist Statement:

Growing up my favorite movie was Disney’s The Little Mermaid. As long as I can remember, I have always been fascinated by mermaids. My parents would feed into my imagination by taking me out on boat rides. Sometimes, if we were lucky, we would see a pod of dolphins jumping around our boat or a group of sea otters off in the distance.

As I grew older, my appreciation and respect for the wild life grew too. However, I also realized the damage that was being done to the beautiful wildlife by the thoughtlessness and greed of others. The waste we produce continuously increases, and impacts our precious wildlife.

This piece was inspired by events that are happening around me and the frustration I feel. The trash we throw in our ocean is harming every little kid’s mermaid.

Title of Art Piece: Self Portrait
Category: Textile/Fiber Design – 2018
Student/Artist’s Name: Abigale Bystedt
School: Nikiski Middle/High School
Grade: 11th
Artist Statement:

To represent myself I combined a German Shepard with my own face with a lupine to represent the love I have for German Shepard and my Mom. I had never used watercolor or painted a lupine so it was a risk to put it on a nice drawing but it was worth it!
