The Flowers Inside

April 1, 2017 ASAA

(1st Place – Photography)

Title of Art Piece: The Flowers Inside
Category: Photography – 2017
Student/Artist’s Name: Spencer Stratton
School: Thunder Mountain High School
Grade: 12th
Artist Statement:

I was learning how to do double exposure in photoshop. I combined three photographs, two of them I had taken of some of the flowers at Glacier Gardens in Juneau. I really like flowers, and believe they tend to make everything just a little bit more beautiful, so I figured I might as well try it on myself. After tons of opacity changes, masking work, and editing the background to have the right colors, I finally got to a result that I was happy with.

Title of Art Piece: Fish Ice Sculpture
Category: Photography – 2017
Student/Artist’s Name: Amanda Wagner
School: West Valley High School
Grade: 12th
Artist Statement:

When I went to ice park during the night time, I was getting inspired by all of the ice sculptures that were there. I had my photography camera with me. I was feeling pretty tempted to take pictures of the ice sculptures. From them all, I liked the fish ice sculpture the most because of it’s detail design, it’s color, it’s looks, and it just really stand out to me. I tried to get the camera as focus as I could and once I took the shot, it turned out good. Took a few seconds, and because of it being so dark outside, I was able to capture it very well with the amount of light that it had to it.

Title of Art Piece: Time for Reflection
Category: Photography – 2017
Student/Artist’s Name: Celeste Jensen
School: West Valley High School
Grade: 12th
Artist Statement:

I was in Hawaii on vacation with my family, spending time by the pool, when I noticed that there was a cool reflection of the palm trees in the puddles. I quickly ran home to get my camera and when I returned I had to contort myself into some strange positions to get the right angle for the reflections I wanted to capture. I really like this photo because it shows the trees from a unique perspective that I think usually goes unnoticed.

My cousin and I took a long drive for digital photography class insperation out to Seward. When we stopped in Cooper Landing I wanted to capture the melting ice. It turned out to be a very adventurous photo as the ice cracked while I get down to capture the clear water. I was fortunate that the pyramid shaped rock under water lines up with the snow covered mountain in the background….maybe a sign of the changing season. Most Alaskans are ready for it.

Category: Photography – 2017
Student/Artist’s Name: Toshio Matsuoka
School: Service High School
Grade: 10th
Artist Statement:

My photography has been inspired by the desire to be able to express what I find important and beautiful. Photography has also been an outlook for me whether it be the creative experience or the community it offers. The piece “Deprivation and the Unknown” has encapsulated what I have been trying to photograph since I started. It has a true sense of beauty and wonder which makes the viewer contemplate the photograph and it’s story; it also captures a moment which almost seems surreal. To me this has been the most fulfilling photograph I have taken.

I took this photo from a viewpoint on the Juneau-Douglas bridge. It was in the afternoon and
lighting was perfect. The sky was a bright, brilliant blue and filled with clouds that made a variety
of patterns and added contrast to the upper part of the composition. The mountains helped
frame the lower portion of the photograph and the ship gives scale to the sky.
I think this photo shows how big our Alaskan landscape is, and how closely our town (Juneau) is
tied to tourism.
