Strength of the Koi

April 5, 2016 ASAA

Mikayla-Strength-of-the-Koi

Title of Art Piece: Strength of the Koi
Category: Painting – 2016
Student/Artist’s Name: Mikayla Morrison
School: Valdez High School
Grade: 12th
Artist Statement: For as long as I can remember, I have had an extensive attraction for Koi fish. I never neglect the opportunity to peer into an enchanted koi pond when given the chance. Some may think my attraction to them is strictly because of their bright coloring or interest in the Japanese culture. Although koi fish are beautiful, that is not the main reason that I desire them.

According to a Japanese legend, a koi fish decided to swim upstream to gain enlightenment. On the fish’s travels against the current, the koi encountered several burdensome obstacles which helped it to grow stronger and more motivated each step of its expedition. As it reached the end of the river, still fighting against the unforgiving pull of the current, it swam upward into the waterfall in front of it. Because the koi faced the hard-hitting current its whole journey without giving up, it finally reached the top of the waterfall transforming into a flying dragon, where it would never have to struggle in the relentless river again.

This myth serves a variety of lessons and values to be learned. The values that stand out to myself, I use to motivate me are to never give up, just like the fish did not, demonstrating courage and strength. No matter how hard the current pushed it around, the koi had determination to finish what it started rather than just let itself flow back to where it began. Success is not easy, you have to work for it. The symbol of the koi I use to encourage myself to never give up when times get difficult, set my goals higher than I believe I can achieve, and once I attain my goals, I will be able to adore my hard work while enjoying my success.

Title of Art Piece: Roses
Category: Painting – 2016
Student/Artist’s Name: Katherine Lessard
School: East Anchorage High School
Grade: 11th
Artist Statement: My painting was inspired by the Italian artist Michelangelo Merisi da Caravaggio. I loved the vivid deep colors in Caravaggio’s paintings and incorporated a similar color palette in my own piece with the dark red roses and bright green leaves. I also admired Caravaggio’s use of light and shadows and used a similar technique to give my painting depth.

Title of Art Piece: Alaskan Stuntman
Category: Painting – 2016
Student/Artist’s Name: Luke Butler
School: East Anchorage High School
Grade: 9th
Artist Statement: This painting represents Alaska to me. This is a tempera painting that was dipped in ink. The process is called tempera-resist. It was fun, and I had to open up and trust the final product. It was a project I had to take risks on. I had to add bright colors to make the painting stand out. I hope viewers notice it as a painting and not as a print.

Category: Painting – 2016
Student/Artist’s Name: Geo Yi

Artist Statement: I was inspired by the large and constant fire weeds that grew in our yard during the summer. Not being long time resident of Alaska, I found this to be very dream like. I tried to draw the fluffy fire weeds behind the uniform trees in the back to give a sense of light lightheartedness and breeziness.

Category: Painting – 2016
Student/Artist’s Name: Melissa Allen
School: East Anchorage High School
Grade: 12th
Artist Statement: This is a painting of my brother. It means a lot to me because he has autism. He hates pictures of himself or videos of himself, but he said he really liked my painting. I think it is a perfect representation of his personality, very playful and confident. We were at a winter solstice party and the host had paper crowns, fake glasses, and we were playing “Apples to Apples”. I used oil paint, mostly burnt sienna for this painting.

Title of Art Piece: Cinderella
Category: Painting – 2016
Student/Artist’s Name: Ashtin Bennett
School: Eagle River High School
Grade: 10th
Artist Statement: In this piece, “Cinderella” I used acrylic paint, sharpie marker, and detail pens to construct the relationship between a father and his daughter. Using the lyrics from Steven Curtis Chapman’s song, ‘Cinderella’, I created a feeling of movement as they dance on the clock face. The lack of facial features allows for a personal connection to the viewer.

Title of Art Piece: Seeping Out
Category: Painting – 2016
Student/Artist’s Name: Merryn Daniel
School: West Anchorage High School
Grade: 12th
Artist Statement: The goal of this painting is to convey the struggle of mental illness, especially depression.
The left figure in this painting is the inner self of the man on the right. The tentacle that crosses the line of symmetry in this painting suggests that this self he keeps hidden is coming to the surface, and that the disfigured man is limiting the man that is intact. With the green as the only color against the black-and-white surroundings, I show how the world feels dim and less vibrant in this state of mind.
I wanted to illustrate the masks many people wear to face society.

Category: Painting – 2016
Student/Artist’s Name: Sophia Elias
School: West Anchorage High School
Grade: 12th
Artist Statement: My painting highlights the uniqueness of an Alaskan childhood. From an outside perspective, the bus in my painting juxtaposes with its surrounding. However growing up in Alaska, our bus rides to school were as much of an integral part of our lives as our adventures in the mountains or interactions with other creatures. As I grow older, that relationship is something I will always cherish.

Title of Art Piece: Desolation
Category: Painting – 2016
Student/Artist’s Name: Amanda Gassan
School: Thunder Mountain High School
Grade: 12th
Artist Statement: I find that there is a beauty in exhaustion. This piece is inspired by a picture taken of Cole Sprouse in a green house looking like he hadn’t slept in days. The purple watercolor under his eyes stood out against the warm tones paints. The blur of colors below his collar represent the flowers in a delusional viewpoint cause by lack of sleep. This effect was created by letting the colors bleed together, pooling the water on the paper and blowing the paint in the direction I wanted it to stray.

Artist Statement: My painting, Wounded, is somewhat dear to me as it is based off a close friend of mine. While the girl’s expression is relatively calm, the arrows suggest she is going through a great deal of pain. I chose this opposing juxtaposition to represent how many who suffer with depression, grief, or anxiety are able to show a calm and collected front.
