Eyes Chatter

April 1, 2018 ASAA

(1st Place – Mixed Media)

Title of Art Piece: Eyes Chatter
Category: Mixed Media – 2018
Student/Artist’s Name: Lake Siner
School: Thunder Mountain High School
Grade: 12th
Artist Statement:

I never actually plan my pieces. I let the clay tell me what to do. Most pieces end up with patterns of alternating chatter marks and dots. As my middle name is Argus, I realized that I am adding the mythical of my namesake into my pieces. I also have discovered the Great Argus Pheasant and how this bird creates its feather patterns with the same “eyes”. This “Argus Eyes” vase and the Great Argus Pheasant feathers are a perfect pair. This piece is a perfect compliment of each other and who we are.

Bridge Over Troubled Waters

April 2, 2018 ASAA

(2nd Place – Mixed Media)

Title of Art Piece: Bridge Over Troubled Waters
Category: Mixed Media – 2018
Student/Artist’s Name: Kaitlyn Christopher
School: South Anchorage High School
Grade: 11th
Artist Statement:

This piece was made with the many violent terrorism attacks that have plagued our planet this past year in mind. I drew inspiration from Simon and Garfunkel’s song Bridge Over Troubled Water, which is also what I decided to name this piece. I chose to use triangles as they can symbolise resilience. If you exert force on any side of a triangle, it will not break. The triangles represent the resilience, in times of tragedy, that communities often show. They all band together in support. On the wave the dark blue triangles represent the deep sorrow that is felt right after a tragedy occurs, and as the triangle fades to the light blue, it shows how the pain we all feel lessens with that support of others. At the caps of the waves the stark white represents hope. The bridge going over the water is meant to represent the helping hands from communities around the world, that offer their support following each tragedy. The bridge is made out of frosted twigs connected by wire. The frost on the twigs represent the overwhelming sense of hope that is being taken over the bridge. The use of the natural material is to represent the natural human response of sympathy during a tragedy. The twigs are used also to contrast the man made chaos of the troubled water or the wave, that represents the terrorism in our world.

April 3, 2018 ASAA

(3rd Place – Mixed Media)

Title of Art Piece: 232333
Category: Mixed Media – 2018
Student/Artist’s Name: Kaitlyn Christopher
School: South Anchorage High School
Grade: 11th
Artist Statement:

This portrait was designed with the work of Jean Michel Basquiat in mind. Basquiat inspired me to venture into the use of colors that traditionally don’t go together along with materials that aren’t usually thought of together in an overall cohesive design. I was also inspired by the Alaskan Native culture and the bead work that comes from the villages. I decided to mix the industrialized world that is Basquiat with the naturalistic world that is shown in native lifestyles in order to make one balanced work of art. All of the bead work comes from the native side of inspiration, while the background of crumpled tin foil with a matte finish over it and that overall design of the portrait comes from the industrialized Basquiat side of inspiration.

Eve

(3rd Place – Mixed Media)

Title of Art Piece: Eve
Category: Mixed Media – 2018
Student/Artist’s Name: Savannah Landis
School: South Anchorage High School
Grade: 12th
Artist Statement:

For my piece titled Eve, I was exploring the concept of threshold for an art school’s challenge. I wanted to push the idea of threshold as a point of change or boundary in the terms of self-exploration. The snake represents rebirth, as snakes shed their skin. Also, the titling and visual of the snake with the girl brings out the biblical story of Adam & Eve- the boundaries of good and evil and the effects of change on the individual.

The Truth About the Internet and Social Media

April 5, 2018 ASAA

(Honorable Mention – Mixed Media)

Title of Art Piece: The Truth About the Internet and Social Media
Category: Mixed Media – 2018
Student/Artist’s Name: Hailey Holland
School: Joe Redington Sr Jr/Sr High School
Grade: 11th
Artist Statement:

I came across an article that talked about the downsides to having Internet and Social Media, and I felt that it really spoke to me. People now a day are on their phones way too much, it consumes them and makes it so they don’t have as much human contact as they once did. The article went into detail with all of the statistics on suicide rates and the lack of human contact in today’s society.

To show that phones are now controlling people’s lives, I started the piece with a phone. The phone is a simple phone with six highly used apps. Coming out of the phone is a hand in the shape of a gun. This represents how the phone has a lot of mean people (bullies) telling you what to do, and what not to do. On the end of the hand (gun) there are puppet strings which are attached to a heart. This is representing that your hands do harm to your body, and when you have a mean source telling you mean things, it can have a major impact on someone’s life, and can even take their life. The background is a grey scale, that shows the phone is the dark thing, and your heart is an innocent thing

A Change for the Better?

April 6, 2018 ASAA

Title of Art Piece: A Change for the Better?
Category: Mixed Media – 2018
Student/Artist’s Name: Jazmyn Caulkins
School: Palmer High School
Grade: 12th
Artist Statement:

This piece is a commentary on how drastic of a change your life makes as you make your way from childhood to adulthood. This change can be clearly seen in the types of books you read. I chose to take cut outs from books that would represent what the person might care about in the different stages of their life. The cut outs are arranged inside an outline of a person at different stages in their life. The arrangement is in the shape of a thumbprint, my thumbprint to be specific, because this is something very personal but is also a problem every human in existence faces. The child figures body language is carefree while the adult figure is slumped and depressed from the weight of the responsibilities that they now carry. The colors around the child are bright and playful to go with their nature. The adult is dripping a dark purple that represents the troubles and responsibilities that come with being an adult.

I’ve lived in Alaska for my whole life, and fishing is a big part of our culture here in Alaska, so I decided to paint a fish in a net. For this mixed media assignment, I had a lot of various materials available to use. I experimented with using different acrylic mediums and gels to thicken the paint. I then cut slits in my canvas and threaded a fishing net through the painting, so that it looks like the fish is caught in the net.

Title of Art Piece: Vacation
Category: Mixed Media – 2018
Student/Artist’s Name: Keriakia Hammer
School: Service High School
Grade: 10th
Artist Statement:

This piece of art was inspired by my family’s winter break vacation to Hawaii. Both myself and my younger sister are the subject of this composition. The monotonous background, contrary to the expected emotion of excitement invoked by the simple thought of a vacation, depicts the overall gloomy feeling I had felt during this trip. The complementary colors used for myself and my younger sister’s bathing suits represent the very opposite personalities we possess and give great insight as to what those personalities might be based on the chosen hue. Overall that vacation was, in my eyes, a success, for it inspired my idea for this work.

When originally deciding the color scheme, I was initially interested in using primary colors, but after some thought I thought it would be more unique to choose a variation on primary colors–yellow, turquoise, and pink instead. I thought these colors nicely balanced out the skeletal structure, along with accentuating the background and it’s texture. The project was a learning experience, and I enjoyed experimenting with a variation of different colors along with textures.
