Title of Art Piece: Reading the Morning News
Category: Mixed Media – 2015
Student/Artist’s Name: Sarah Crider
School: Thunder Mountain High School
Grade: 9th
Artist Statement: We had a project in our digital arts class – to transform life from classical painting into contemporary life. I chose the painting “At Breakfast” by Karl Maria Schuster. I thought it would be fun to show the old style lady reading news from the iPad. I used the classical painting with combination of photoshop tools (mixed media).

Title of Art Piece: The Seal
Category: Mixed Media – 2015
Student/Artist’s Name: Daisy Iyakitan
School: Gambell
Grade: 9th
Artist Statement: The seal is a very special animal to me and to our family. My mother uses the skin to make Eskimo dolls that she sells, and after the hunters catch the seals and bring them home, they cut them into pieces, put them into Ziploc bags, and share them with the elders and others. I love the shape and size of the seal, and how cute and fat they are.

Lovina-Steve

Title of Art Piece: Tones
Category: Mixed Media – 2015
Student/Artist’s Name: Lovina Steve
School: Stebbins
Grade: 12th
Artist Statement: When I first saw this picture, I was pretty intimidated by how the girl was looking at the camera. I’m not good with faces, but I try my best to make it look realistic and perfect. I liked how the dress looked and the way it turned out at the end. I thought the dress was going to be hard to do because of the arm but it turned out okay. It was easy at first but then it started to get complicated, but in the end, it turned out better than I thought. The materials that we had to use were three shadings of paper and glue. I never worked with them ever since my sixth grade year. To me this artwork gives me strength to do my best and inspires me to keep going.

Words. Words. Words.

April 8, 2015 ASAA

IMG_0137

Title of Art Piece: Words. Words. Words.
Category: Mixed Media – 2015
Student/Artist’s Name: Olivia Rivera
School: Kodiak High School
Grade: 12th
Artist Statement: As an artist, I view art as a key part of recovery. This piece in particular addresses a problem that isn’t necessarily subject matter in every day art pieces: self harm and body image. Where the throat is slit and the blood is pouring out, words are carved into the pastel repeating particular phrases that have been pointed at me directly: “fat” “chubby” “you’d be prettier if you were skinnier” and the absolute worse “you’re going to have to learn to deal with your problems like a regular person”. All of these words had affected me my first three years of high school to the point of unhealthy habits. However, visible at the bottom of the piece are flowers. Contrasted with the rough pastel work, these watercolor flowers are bordered with words of praise and encouragement I have also heard, words that have built me up and made me feel important. Words such as “talented” “don’t stop being you” and things to look forward to in life: “Arizona!” “Broadway” and most importantly “love”. All of these words within the flowers are reasons to keep on living. Not matter what life has thrown at me this art piece reminds me that nothing can drag me down, the words within the blood don’t affect me anymore and that there is so much in this world worth living for.

Title of Art Piece: You’ve Got a Pretty Kind of Dirty Face
Category: Mixed Media – 2015
Student/Artist’s Name: Anastasia Skonberg
School: Kodiak High School
Grade: 11th
Artist Statement: The song that these lyrics are from is “Robbers” by The 1975. I decided to use these specific lyrics because of what the song is about. Two people are falling in love but being destructive at the same time. Toxic Love if you will. She’s less innocent than she looks, and their love is less innocent than it appears to be. I also like the way the dirtiness of the newspaper and paint drips look against the magazine letter words, making it appear dirty and disorganized, like toxic love.

Title of Art Piece: Rebirth
Category: Mixed Media – 2015
Student/Artist’s Name: Ryan Branson
School: Kodiak High School
Grade: 12th
Artist Statement: This piece was created to express my perception of death. It is a clay mask created by pushing clay into a plaster mold of my face and then sculpted to achieve the finer details. When I die, my soul will pass on but my physical body will remain a part of the earth. My flesh will become the dirt beneath us, symbolized by the clay by which it is made. The antlers represent the animals that will benefit from my death as well as the flowers who will absorb nutrients from my decomposing body. through death, I will become one with mother earth.

Annika-1

Title of Art Piece: A Sticky Mess
Category: Mixed Media – 2015
Student/Artist’s Name: Annika Fincher
School: Kodiak High School
Grade: 12th
Artist Statement: “A Sticky Mess” is a portrayal of one opinion of the viscid catastrophe occurring in the Middle East. Even though the wars are not fought on American soil, their aftermath affects us all.

When people initially see my project, their first reaction is always “That’s so gross!” When I tell them about the symbolism behind the piece, they say, “It’s still disgusting”. What’s disgusting? The chewed gum? War is disgusting. Afghanistan. Pakistan. Libya. Yemen. Iraq. Syria. People are dying. The death toll is rising and people are horrified by gum.

Title of Art Piece: Let the Love Shine
Category: Mixed Media – 2015
Student/Artist’s Name: Cheyenne Geffken
School: Palmer High School
Grade: 11th
Artist Statement: I created this piece with the ideas of diversity and love as well as peace and acceptance in mind. I would love to see a world in the near future that exemplifies these things–specifically acceptance of others’ cultures and lifestyles and worldwide peace. I believe that my generation is the one that can help bring our world into a greater state of being as a whole and I hoped to capture this mindset in my work in a fun, eye-catching way. Our world is not perfect, but we need to see the beauty in it.

Heart

Title of Art Piece: Heart Trauma
Category: Mixed Media – 2015
Student/Artist’s Name: Samuel Bernitz
School: West Anchorage High School
Grade: 11th
Artist Statement: I am an International Baccalaureate student at West High School. I made this piece as part of my focus portfolio, my focus being heart related imagery and symbolism through the use of emphasis. The heart is a graphite drawing mounted on foam core board with a combination of acrylic paint, gesso, and gravel for the blood, the piece was finished off with an exact-o knife jabbed into the board. The heart, commonly associated with the soul of a person, is being disrupted by the inorganic and metallic knife; the disruption brings out an extreme reaction from the heart. The piece is also largely symbolic of my own experiences with open heart surgery, and other invasive procedures. It displays the feelings of invasion, pain, and trauma related to open heart surgery.

Title of Art Piece: Painted Ladies
Category: Mixed Media – 2015
Student/Artist’s Name: Ryan Branson
School: Kodiak High School
Grade: 12th
Artist Statement: Painted Ladies
I came across the concept of creating paintings with photographs while studying artist Alexa Meade and decided to do my own rendition of the idea. This photo is both a work of painting and photographic art. I spent time analyzing the model’s unique features and deciding which to emphasize and which to hide. With a base coat of purple, I began to build over top of her skin an entirely new form.Even though I gave my model a new appearance, she remained the same entity in a different shell. At first glance, my first impression is not “purple”, it is “beautiful”. Both beautiful and alien, to me, she represents the social construct of race and how our society segregates humans into categories based on their appearance and color.
