Title of Art Piece: Coyote
Category: Jewelry / Metalsmithing – 2017
Student/Artist’s Name: Laurel Scheel
School: East Anchorage High School
Grade: 9th
Artist Statement:

I got the idea for my piece from a drawing my sister did on a foam plate. I designed both the coyote and the background to be simplistic because the desert at night feels simple. A coyote howling at the moon also represents the desert because it is iconic.

Unicorn

April 10, 2017 ASAA

Title of Art Piece: Unicorn
Category: Jewelry / Metalsmithing – 2017
Student/Artist’s Name: Kim Cinco
School: Ben Eielson High School
Grade: 12th
Artist Statement:

I chose to take a jewelry class because it gives me hands-on skills working with metal and carving. I made this design because I was interested in the unicorn in the middle, which I thought was awesome. I knew that this art project would took me a long time to complete, but I wanted to challenge myself to get better at fretwork sawing. It motivated me to do even more challenging designs in the future. The first thing that I did to make this project was to draw four different designs to choose from. Then I re-drew the design that I picked and glued it onto a copper sheet. I waited for one day for the glue to dry, then I made a hole in the copper and started sawing. It took me about three weeks to finish the entire jewelry project.

Hand crafted glass enamel bracelet

April 10, 2017 ASAA

Title of Art Piece: Hand crafted glass enamel bracelet
Category: Jewelry / Metalsmithing – 2017
Student/Artist’s Name: Hana Johnson
School: West Valley High School
Grade: 11th
Artist Statement:

This bracelet was made by cutting out nickel circles and doming them. I added enamel to the domes and after laying the base color of enamel I added a pattern. The most challenging part of the bracelet was the stamping. It took a couple tries to get the leaf stamps to look right. The stamp would slide all over the domed, slippery surface smearing the ink. Trial and error over and over again but I got the un-smeared leaf pattern that I was looking for.
