Hive Mind

Title of Art Piece: Hive Mind

Grade: 10th
Artist Statement:

This piece was based on my strong love of insects, but was also based in finding beauty and intricacy in an insect not typically seen as beautiful. The moths are based one multiple different species, including tiger moths and hawk moths, but combine many different species different traits and unique features.

Wolf Hunt

Artist Statement:

This was for an assignment using linear perspective and I guess I put my own spin on it. I tend to lean toward organic forms and shapes, so animals are usually my preference. I love wolves and these five are actually original characters that a friend and I created. It was exciting to use them in a project bigger than what I would typically do.

Twisty Tunnel

My inspiration for this piece was to display an optical illusion with depth. It is based on the op art style with contrasting colors and ideas to create illusions for the eye. I used graphite pencils to contrast the bright white of the paper and blended the pencil out to give the illusion of depth.

Clementine X Me

(Honorable Mention – Drawing)

Title of Art Piece: Clementine X Me
Category: Drawing – 2019
Student/Artist’s Name: Tzadi Hauck

Grade: 11th
Artist Statement:

This piece is my second self portrait. I chose prisma colored pencils as my medium to harness more control of the drawing. Using colored pencils is more intimate because each layer is purposeful; every mark cannot be erased or painted over. The beauty in colored pencils is that it shows progression.

The incorporation of orange conveys energy and strength. I wanted to portray my vibrancy and optimistic look on life while still creating a feeling of grandeur.

The title is Clementine x Me because clementines are hybrids and so am I. Clementines are a hybrid of a mandarin orange and a sweet orange. Like the clementines I am half white and half black. My identity is an important part of who I am and being to express that through art is vital.

The Constant Turmoil Between Omnipotent Figures and Modern Society

(3rd Place – Drawing)

Title of Art Piece: The Constant Turmoil Between Omnipotent Figures and Modern Society
Category: Drawing – 2019
Student/Artist’s Name: Nataly Maldonado
School: Eagle River High School
Grade: 11th
Artist Statement:

I started this piece with nothing but a rough idea of what I wanted to do and a picture of a girl I just really wanted to draw. As time went on, I started to realize that this drawing really symbolized me. I chose cherubs to represent religion in my life and how its always been a constant presence since I was young. As we grow older, the traditions we were born into may not completely fit our worldview. The girl I really wanted to draw became a personal representation of choices I face as I define my identity.

I did a portrait of an extraordinary artist who inspires me to be better than I am! Her name is Steph Agaezi and I follow her on twitter. She uses an abundance of artistic liberties in her work so I decided it would be fun to draw her in my own style with colored pencil.

Category: Drawing – 2019
Student/Artist’s Name: Kelton Jensen
School: Palmer High School

Artist Statement:

I created this art piece to give the viewer a sense of imagination and surrealism. I created this art piece with the intention of having it full of creatures so that each time you look at it you can discover something new and fun to look at. I used the line of the monster’s tongue to help guide the viewer’s eye throughout the drawing.
