The Dead Line

April 1, 2018 ASAA

(1st Place – Drawing)

Title of Art Piece: The Dead Line
Category: Drawing – 2018
Student/Artist’s Name: Michael Julson
School: Thunder Mountain High School
Grade: 12th
Artist Statement:

This piece embodies the strain that I put on myself while working on a piece for any reason other than my own. Mostly connected to the piece itself, this feeling arises whenever i work on anything. However in this case it was much more intense because it was on such short notice. I just zoned out for a sec, woops.

(Honorable Mention – Drawing)

Title of Art Piece: Bugs
Category: Drawing – 2018
Student/Artist’s Name: Kirsten Delozier
School: Eagle River High School
Grade: 12th
Artist Statement:

For this piece, I was interested in the subject’s expression. Why is he looking at us like that? Some think he’s winking. Others think he’s yelling at someone. I love that it’s open to interpretation, and in a way he’s saying a lot without saying anything. I used a variety of colored ink and water to bring out the expression and wrinkles on his face in the style of pointillism.

April 6, 2018 ASAA

Title of Art Piece: Amuse
Category: Drawing – 2018
Student/Artist’s Name: Deja Jackson
School: Bethel Regional High School
Grade: 11th
Artist Statement:

My piece is suppose to look like me, but instead I feel like I look like a potato or Freddy Krueger as told from a friend. By using a pen it helped enhance the structure of my entire face. It was hard to create light and dark shades. I wanted to create something funny, so I looked through my photo album and choose this photograph. At first the piece wasn’t going to have all the little lines on my face, but without them it would be hard to show light and dark areas of my face. I learned that this project take awhile and you have to have a lot of patience.

Just Hold On, We’re Going Home

Title of Art Piece: Just Hold On, We’re Going Home
Category: Drawing – 2018
Student/Artist’s Name: Antonio Fuentes
School: Homer High School
Grade: 11th
Artist Statement:

My inspiration was Albrecht Durer, and Drake’s album, “Nothing was the Same.” I used chalk pastel on paper to make the lighter colors pop. I wanted it to feel like a painting done by Albrecht Durer, but have my body fully facing forward, verses Drake where he was facing to the right. I have myself facing away from the sun as if I’m leaving and never looking back. The jewelry is supposed to signify beauty and unity; as it is okay to wear jewelry, but it is vain to flaunt it around.

Breaking Through the Shell

April 6, 2018 ASAA

Title of Art Piece: Breaking Through the Shell
Category: Drawing – 2018
Student/Artist’s Name: Evangeline Unger
School: Unalaska City School
Grade: 12th
Artist Statement:

I created this piece as a statement on the difficulties I sometimes have breaking through my shell and being outgoing. I am naturally a shy person and have recently been trying to push myself out of my comfort zone more often, and I feel as if this piece reflects that. This work is very highly contrasted and also decidedly central, which, I think, encourages the viewer to think in terms of solitude and a heightened sense of reality, as such a self-actualizing experience as pushing one’s boundaries usually is.

Title of Art Piece: The Tropical Zentangle
Category: Drawing – 2018
Student/Artist’s Name: Zoe DaCosta
School: Bethel Regional High School
Grade: 12th
Artist Statement:

I absolutely love the simplicity of the pineapple, but to invigorate or elaborate on the artwork, I chose to put the zentangle design within the pineapple for it to become more of an illusion. I also chose it because I like the pineapple being the main focus, making it look “busy” then creating a more monotone background. The reason I chose to draw a pineapple is because it reminds me of summer and being somewhere tropical.

Title of Art Piece: Epiphany
Category: Drawing – 2018
Student/Artist’s Name: Abigail Veliz-Magana
School: Eagle River High School
Grade: 10th
Artist Statement:

I was inspired by that feeling you get when you have an epiphany. For me, there’s this period of separation…and then being in the moment instantaneously. The astronaut floating in space best represents this, and as she gazes towards Earth, she feels this connection to home, which is reflected in her face mask. This is also an artwork where I really felt like I grew as an artist. It was difficult to achieve the correct proportions, details, and shadows in the spacesuit using oil pastels. But overall I’m really satisfied with the result!

Title of Art Piece: Howling Night
Category: Drawing – 2018
Student/Artist’s Name: Brycen Alexie
School: Bethel Regional High School
Grade: 11th
Artist Statement:

My reason for having been interested in wolves is that they had always interested me as a child. I once thought of them as amazing, but now I think of them as beautiful creatures. Something else that I have liked about them, is that they travel in packs. They eat together, travel together and live together as a family. My empty pen project is of a lone wolf howling in the dark of night. A wolf without a family, alone in a world filled with darkness.

Hercules

April 6, 2018 ASAA

Title of Art Piece: Hercules
Category: Drawing – 2018
Student/Artist’s Name: Austen Markiewicz
School: Houston High School
Grade: 12th
Artist Statement:

To the viewers of this piece. This artwork was inspired by the original stories of the famous Greek hero Hercules. The art depicts Hercules wearing the Nemean Lion. However as I proceeded with the design I thought to myself, “What can I do to make it stand out more to the people’s eyes”. Instead of doing Hercules wearing the lion’s pelt, there was another story my recollection had where he fights a hydra, so I began to mix the two monsters together for a more reptilian and a more mythical design for it. As the story goes that the Nemean Lion’s pelt is supposed to be stronger than the hardest armor on a knight’s body so I made the skin more scaly and gave it a dragon appearance to it as if he wore the dragon’s skin instead of the lion’s. One factor for this piece of art is that it’s supposed to create an illusion. One side of the picture shows that the beast has his mouth open and swallowing the human’s head. Another side shows the mane of the beast (I left that part of the lion in there for a more ancient aspect) connecting to the face as a beard and the animal head is used as a helmet. I hope you all enjoy my piece of art.

Title of Art Piece: Seasonal Activities
Category: Drawing – 2018
Student/Artist’s Name: Brianna Jensen
School: Palmer High School
Grade: 12th
Artist Statement:

In my piece, I wanted to portray the common activities one can do in the outdoors. Specifically, the activity that correspond with each season. In this case, I put a duck for hunting in the winter, while a fly rod represents fishing in the summer. To communicate this seasonal difference within each object, I organized them in a clockwise rotation that the viewer can follow. My inspiration for this piece came from the vibrant colors that Jasmine Jan uses in her pieces. By using vibrant colors that worked well with each other, I hoped to communicate a light feeling of excitement through my piece, as these activities are my favorite things to do in my free time.

In this I attempted to create a sense of peace and stability by the use of horizontal line and warm lighting. I wanted to invoke a sense of wonder and imagination, using bright and vibrant colors whilst still keeping it calm and down to earth. This piece was made using pastels, a medium that is versatile yet can just as easily become muddied and gross. However, pastels provided the texture crucial to making this piece come together. This scene was based off the game “Breath of the Wild” of the Legend of Zelda franchise, something that has really captured my heart at the moment.

I chose to draw a sea shell for this project for many reasons. I found this shell on a beach one day in Hawaii and I really liked the shape and look of it. At first it was difficult to figure out how to draw such a small shell on a big paper. I stippled the shaded areas because I like how different lighting can make the shell look so different in many ways. Every time I moved the shell to find the right lighting, different shadows were portrayed across the shell. The spikes spiraling from the tip to the base of the shell and the little lines show the unique texture and form. Stippling was a great way to express these details and show how the shading is different all around the piece.

I decided to draw my late grandfather. This photo was taken while he served in the Air Force, meaning he was somewhere in his early to late 20’s. To sketch and shade, I used graphite, more specifically a HB pencil and a 6B pencil. This picture means a lot to my family and I. Since he passed away from lung cancer when I was about four years old, I never got to truly know what made him such an amazing and wonderful man. From what my mother told me, we had very similar personalities, and my eyes would light up every time I saw him. If he was still alive today, I’m sure we would’ve had an amazing connection not only on a grandparent-grandchild relationship, but also on a wonderful friendship level. Drawing this portrait connected me to him in a beautiful way.

This project originally was started before Christmas and near the finals rush where it took more of a backburner. I always favored other projects over it. However, it gradually began to take shape and turned into a more finished work. It sat on my shelf for a while after the Christmas break. Ms. Haggland eventually asked me if I felt like re-visiting it and slowly it was completed!
