Blooming

April 16, 2019 ASAA

(Honorable Mention – Multicultural Art)

Title of Art Piece: Blooming
Category: Multicultural Art – 2019
Student/Artist’s Name: Bailee Petersen
School: Palmer High School
Grade: 11th
Artist Statement:

Carolyn Cohen, a batik artist, used her artwork to bring awareness to social issues. This piece is a tribute to school shooting victims. I used a traditional Indonesian tjanting tool and hot wax to create the outline of a handgun with flowers exploding out of the barrel, instead of bullets. Those bold flowers represent the teenage minds that were just starting to bloom. I express my belief that individuals should take a position of love when responding to animosity.

Artwork Dimensions: 20 inches high x 40 inches wide
