Social Zen Mania

April 22, 2021 ASAA

1st Place – Sculpture

Title of Art Piece: Social Zen Mania
Category: Sculpture – 2021
Student/Artist’s Name: Ruby Wright
School: Palmer High School
Grade: 12th
Artist Statement: My intent is to portray the toxic addictiveness that the social media companies put on their apps. I chose to juxtapose the Zen garden with the social media companies to show the way people are drawn in to these apps and are becoming the users. The rocks show the relaxing side of a Zen garden and the qualities that come with it. On the other side, I drew alarming words that describe the companies.

The Guide

April 20, 2021 ASAA

3rd Place – Sculpture

Title of Art Piece: The Guide
Category: Sculpture – 2021
Student/Artist’s Name: Tonda Smude
School: Homer High School
Grade: 12th
Artist Statement: Often known as a guide for spirits the Octopus has been recognized as a very powerful habitant of the ocean being able to control the weather while also being incredibly intelligent. I used a clay slab and started with a relief carving of an octopus crawling out of a wooden frame into a storm of clouds. After drying for a few days we used a series of under glazes, fired it, and then used black underglaze to define the small details and a clear glaze. The finished product was a fusion of blues blacks and greys that gave this piece of work the perfect stormy look.

Cardboard Automaton

April 19, 2021 ASAA

Honorable Mention – Sculpture

Title of Art Piece: Cardboard Automaton
Category: Sculpture – 2021
Student/Artist’s Name: Alex Franklin
School: Homer High School
Grade: 11th
Artist Statement: In the 1800’s there were automatons, which were little mechanical men. The only thing that moved them were little gears, and that was my inspiration. In the 1200’s there was a saying called “the momento mori” which basically means “remember that you will die.” If you look at the architecture and the aesthetics of that era, with the extreme Catholicism of that time, you can see it with the gargoyles and the skulls. I sort of took those two ideas and put them together. I created this out of cardboard, with a crank and working gears, and a tongue that jostlesand smoke that comes out of the exhaust pipe as the gear rotates.

Arson

April 9, 2021 ASAA

Title of Art Piece: Arson
Category: Sculpture – 2021
Student/Artist’s Name: Katrina Isabell
School: Nikiski High School
Grade: 12th
Artist Statement: This piece was made from the inspiration of Deborah Butterfield’s horse sculptures. I used drift wood that washed up on the beach in Nikiski along with old wire, yarn and paper. I named it Arson because when I look at it I am very tempted to watch it burn. Arson also in my opinion is a fitting name for a dragon. I have always been a fan of dragons, and this was made to look like a sickly, rotting, half horse half dragon being. When making this I imagined the world this creature would live in, an apocalyptic world filled with ash and famine. Serving no other purpose other than to rome the deceit planet consuming any and every sign of life.

Shroom

April 9, 2021 ASAA

Title of Art Piece: Shroom
Category: Sculpture – 2021
Student/Artist’s Name: McKinlee Jefferrys
School: Nikiski High School
Grade: 11th
Artist Statement: I was inspired to make this piece by contemporary artist who use materials from nature. It was difficult and I used many different materials, such as sticks, pinecones and ceramic pieces. I got tired very quickly and the pinecones hurt my hands as I broke them into small pieces. Even so, I wish I would have spent even more time on this. The end product was nothing like I imagined but I learned a lot. I am a person who works really hard to achieve my goals and sculpture is almost symbolic of that. It is day by day trial and error and takes perseverance.
