Spring in Real Times

April 21, 2021 ASAA

2nd Place – Printmaking

Title of Art Piece: Spring in Real Times
Category: Printmaking – 2021
Student/Artist’s Name: Mariana Betancur Rendon
School: West Anchorage High School
Grade: 12th
Artist Statement: My artwork is basically a portrait that shows similarities to spring in Anchorage. The title I chose for this work is “Spring in Real Times”, which I think is a good name because this work is not really shown as we normally visualize it, it does not have the same colors that spring usually has. Art in any sense is a bit difficult to master, but for all of my works I try to create them to the best of my abilities. For this piece I tried to show spring in Anchorage from my point of view, to show that we can see things the way we want to see them. Some of my artistic goals are to try to improve my techniques every day and to try to create something that is truly an innovative impression. I try to be as perfectionist as possible to achieve the final piece I want. I don’t even know if I want to be an artist, but if I choose to be, I would like to have many skills that help me with the management of color, shadows and techniques to achieve one of the best prints, stamps or any other technique in art. I hope that my work serves to recognize the environment that we have around us and to be able to see it in a different way that is not the one we normally see.

Pika

April 19, 2021 ASAA

Honorable Mention – Printmaking

Title of Art Piece: Pika
Category: Printmaking – 2021
Student/Artist’s Name: Liam Chisholm
School: West Anchorage High School
Grade: 10th
Artist Statement: My print depicts a Pika sitting on a mountain ledge holding grasses in its mouth. I used a type of printmaking called intaglio which is unique in that the areas that you “carve” are the areas that show up. I have grown up running and hiking in the mountains and Pikas remind me of all the memories that have been made. I hope my future in art can help bring attention to world problems and help people experience the outdoor state of mind. My art mostly contains nature and animals which I hope can bring attention to the beauty that is right out our back door. This piece was my first attempt at intaglio and I am very happy with how it turned out.

Heart

April 9, 2021 ASAA

Title of Art Piece: Heart
Category: Printmaking – 2021
Student/Artist’s Name: Pia Smith
School: West Anchorage High School
Grade: 9th
Artist Statement: My art piece is of a horse head that is peeking over a circle. It’s called “Heart,” named after a horse I ride. I found his face beautiful and graphic. I tried to make the art piece joyful with the colors and simple lines. I used the design element of value to create depth in the piece. The colors lighten from the back to the front in shades of orange. The piece is made with reduction printing on linoleum. The background is the first layer with the pattern. The second layer is the neck and the third is the main face color. The last layer has all the details and black lines. I am trying to learn to rely less on small lines and more on shapes that suggest an idea. I think this piece starts to show that idea. Overall I’m very happy with the outcome of the print. I always learn about patience with print projects because there are so many layers and prints.

Strawberry Fields

April 9, 2021 ASAA

Title of Art Piece: Strawberry Fields
Category: Printmaking – 2021
Student/Artist’s Name: Anna-liisa Promish
School: West Anchorage High School
Grade: 10th
Artist Statement: My art piece features strawberries with leaves and strawberry blooms. It is a reduction print. Besides printmaking I also really enjoy drawing and stories. I like to include floral patterns and nature motifs in most of my drawings or creations. My clothing and belongings also typically reflect these interests, and that is what inspired this collection of prints. My goal as an artist is to become an author and illustrator for stories. I love incorporating my drawings into my stories and creating characters. Even if I don’t make a career out of art, I would still like to continue making art and telling stories.
