The Patient Lady

April 22, 2021 ASAA

1st Place, 2-Way Tie – Painting & Congressional Award

Title of Art Piece: The Patient Lady
Category: Painting – 2021
Student/Artist’s Name: Garrett Klein
School: Thunder Mountain High School
Grade: 11th
Artist Statement: I started this portrait sometime near the start of quarantine. As soon as I started, I stopped. I lost all my inspiration for painting. Life for the better part of a year felt like I was stuck in a box with no sides. If I wanted to leave, I could– but I knew of the over looming threat. As I was creating this piece, I tried to reflect my feeling of being lost, yet found; distant, but present; eccentric, however patient. That is the story of “The Patient Lady”.

A Serene Moment of Reflection

April 21, 2021 ASAA

1st Place, 2-Way Tie – Painting

Title of Art Piece: A Serene Moment of Reflection
Category: Painting – 2021
Student/Artist’s Name: Farrah Phillips
School: Eagle River High School
Grade: 12th
Artist Statement: Sometimes, the most mundane moments of life can bring you the most peace. It is for that reason I made this painting. I am a military child, so I have moved from place to place for my whole life. It was only when I got older did I truly start to comprehend how surreal a relocation can be. During my most recent move from Alabama to Alaska, I found myself trying to find some sense of normality by completing most ordinary tasks. To get some space and cope with the changes that were ahead, I frequently visited this laundry room within the temporary living facility my family and I stayed in. The room itself was technically nothing special, but the task of doing the laundry became something more to me, and I wanted to capture that in this painting. I altered the colors of the room to display the relief I felt inside it, while not compromising on the character the interior radiated. The goal of this painting was not only to capture the emotions I have tied to this place, but to show appreciation for the raw and mundane beauty life contains.

Pyramiden

April 20, 2021 ASAA

2nd Place – Painting

Title of Art Piece: Pyramiden
Category: Painting – 2021
Student/Artist’s Name: Jacqueline Conde
School: West Valley High School
Grade: 12th
Artist Statement: This was created as a response to the prompt “draw a narrative piece capturing a memory from your childhood”. When I was 10 years old, I spent several months living in the high Arctic archipelago of Svalbard with my parents, while my father was working with NASA on a rocket mission. While living there, I had the opportunity to visit the abandoned Russian mining settlement of Pyramiden. There, I played an off-key rendition of Twinkle Twinkle Little Star on the out-of-tune piano in the music room of the derelict arts and cultural centre. The illustration is meant to depict the contrast between childhood innocence and the horrors of soviet era Russia.

3rd Place – Painting

Title of Art Piece: Lily
Category: Painting – 2021
Student/Artist’s Name: Amber Nelsen
School: Palmer High School
Grade: 11th
Artist Statement: This painting portrays an emotional state resulting from self talk where you focus on and repeat a phrase of words in your head. The blue tinted tattoos represent older, sweeter memories while the brown tinted tattoos represent fresh, harsher memories. The tiger lilies represent protection and bravery as this girl goes through this thought pattern. The lilies fold over her body so that the eyes circle around the artwork.

Of the Four Horseman, Death

Honorable Mention – Painting

Title of Art Piece: Of the Four Horseman, Death
Category: Painting – 2021
Student/Artist’s Name: Corah Higgins
School: Dimond High School
Grade: 12th
Artist Statement: My original thought was to combine a playful, childlike simplicity with the serious, darker subject of the horseman of the apocalypse. Using acrylic paint to create a rotting horse skipping gleefully across time, I challenge the viewer to consider mortality by laughing at fate.

Student/Artist’s Name: Grace Morrow

The Realism of a Japanese Mountain

April 9, 2021 ASAA

Title of Art Piece: The Realism of a Japanese Mountain
Category: Painting – 2021
Student/Artist’s Name: Jericho Pascua
School: West Anchorage High School
Grade: 12th
Artist Statement: For my art piece, I made a recreated version of a landscape which is a perspective view of a Japanese Mountain. I used acrylic paints and made a couple color variations and color blendings to make an accurate match of the actual image. The way my art was recreated with acrylic paints was inspired by realistic painters and my own challenge to exceed my limit for realism. Realistic arts are amazing, however it’s not exactly my main focus. I’m also interested in animations and character designs. Someday I might focus on doing some animations of how the character moves along with the background. I’m not sure what exact goal to aim for as an artist, but I’ll always try new art skills and techniques that will help me with doing character designs and animations.

April 9, 2021 ASAA

Title of Art Piece: The Strategist
Category: Painting – 2021
Student/Artist’s Name: Ezra Adasiak
School: Lathrop High School
Grade: 12th
Artist Statement: This piece comes from my AP portfolio, the theme of which is “The Party”. 15 pieces, each capturing a different moment in a single night, create a tapestry of teenage emotions and interpersonal relationships. The entire portfolio uses a limited color palette, avoiding tranquil blues and greens to convey a sense of urgency, tension, and artifice. “The Strategist” features a boy contemplating his next move in a game of Jenga, after having made a friend at the party. The colors bleeding into one another represent a lowering of inhibitions.

Alpenglow

April 9, 2021 ASAA

Title of Art Piece: Alpenglow
Category: Painting – 2021
Student/Artist’s Name: Paige Jones
School: Homer High School
Grade: 12th
Artist Statement: I call this piece “Alpenglow”. By layering acrylic paint I tried to capture the beauty of a mountain at dusk. One of my favorite things about Alaska is the dusty rose sunsets. They bring me a sense of calm in the storm. That is what I hope this painting will convey as well. A moment of peace, silence, a deep breath. The painting as a whole depicts something large, a mountain, which at times can seem unmeasurable. But the meaning behind it is about appreciating the little things, the small moments that make life worth living.

This painting was done with acrylic paint on a canvas board. The mountain is very peaceful and calming because of the colors I used, and the shape. My goal for this painting was to represent Denali, and overall it is about how I imagined it would turn out.

Title of Art Piece: “Sea”-renity
Category: Painting – 2021
Student/Artist’s Name: Olivia Etzweiler
School: Homer High School
Grade: 10th
Artist Statement: This piece I made, titled ‘Sea’renity, is of several canoes docked on the water, with a big mountain in the background. I created it by using a grid, acrylic paints, and lots of time and attention to detail. I tried to really capture the serenity and relaxing feeling that you would get from actually being there where this painting was based off of. This piece was, and still is, personally one of my favorite paintings i’ve done, and i’d say some of my best work was put into it. I made this when I was just getting into my love for painting, and this piece has been a great reminder for me of what amazing things I can create when I push myself to do so.

Category: Painting – 2021
Student/Artist’s Name: Sophia Gimm
School: Palmer High School

Artist Statement: This piece is about the typical experience associated with family dinner. My intent was to evoke either pleasant or negative memories with the viewer’s family, specifically their dining habits. I want to explore into darker or more pale color palettes, so this painting was an opportunity to represent either strained or calming relationships.
