Retro Relaxation

April 22, 2021 ASAA

1st Place – Drawing & Best of Show

Title of Art Piece: Retro Relaxation
Category: Drawing – 2021
Student/Artist’s Name: Farrah Phillips
School: Eagle River High School
Grade: 12th
Artist Statement: I make art to show my appreciation for the world around me. I believe that there is beauty in everything, it just needs to be sought out. That concept is what inspired this drawing. There is a certain sense of wonder and relaxation that comes with a well-decorated room, and that emotion is absolutely wonderful to me. To display that idea, I compiled many personal interests and objects that make me happy, and drew them in a singular space. I made sure to artistically render many different textures and colors to make the drawing more inviting, interesting, and dynamic. While the goal of this piece was to make a room that I would personally love to be in, I also wanted to give anyone viewing this drawing the same sense of elation I experience when taking the time to enjoy the little things that make life great.

New Moon

April 21, 2021 ASAA

2nd Place – Drawing

Title of Art Piece: New Moon
Category: Drawing – 2021
Student/Artist’s Name: Jacqueline Conde
School: West Valley High School
Grade: 12th
Artist Statement: This self-directed pen and ink drawing was completed in less than a week. It’s a short story comic based on the concept of a “new moon” – that is the time in the lunar cycle in which the moon appears to be absent from the sky and then a new moon appears. In the comic, the moon is knocked out of the sky by an asteroid and falls to earth, landing in a lake. It emerges as a humanoid and travels through the landscape until it finds and befriends the members of a traveling circus who agree to shoot the moon back into the sky if it agrees to perform with them. The art style and general theme of this piece was inspired by the short film “A Trip to The Moon”, by Georges Méliès, as well as by the book “The Invention of Hugo Cabret” by Brian Selznick.

Category: Drawing – 2021

Artist Statement: Schizophrenia is a mental illness where people see and experience reality differently. Sometimes they hallucinate about things or hear voices that aren’t there. This drawing portrays that. This drawing is part of a series of art pieces that are about not being able to sleep. People with schizophrenia struggle to sleep because of the anxiety these voices or hallucinations cause.

Colors of the Yakuza

April 19, 2021 ASAA

Honorable Mention – Drawing

Title of Art Piece: Colors of the Yakuza
Category: Drawing – 2021
Student/Artist’s Name: Trinity Quinto
School: West Anchorage High School
Grade: 11th
Artist Statement: My piece was made with paint markers, drawn on a large piece of cardboard that was given to me out of the blue. I sadly didn’t have time to pick up a canvas for myself so I used what was available at the time, which was said cardboard. This piece uses only eight colors which made me step out of my comfort zone and play around with colors and puzzling colors to use for shading. This gave the piece a little pop to it that I really liked.

The title “Colors of the Yakuza” may seem a bit off setting considering I am not biologically Japanese along with the history of the Yakuza itself. But what really inspired me to make this piece, despite the history behind it, was the group of Yakuza’s tattoos. The attention to detail and usage of bold color in most tattoos, plus how they use up as much space as they can, leaving not one bit of skin un-inked, was a style that spoke to me. It was intriguing to me and I tried my best to sketch it in my piece while also giving it enough of a twist that can be recognized as my own, while also respecting the culture. My inspiration was not only the Yakuza tattoo designs, but just the beauty of Japanese art. I made sure to study the culture and meaning behind each item I drew. From the koi fish to the flowers, I made sure I knew what their meaning was so that I wouldn’t use it out of context, still, respecting the culture. Especially because of many rising Asian hate crimes at the moment, not only Japanese, but other Asian cultures, I wanted to show people the beauty in some of the things they may see as bad, to look past the bad and see just the littlest detail of light.

Overall, I think this piece not only gave me a lot of serotonin while making it, but I also was able to educate myself a bit on the culture behind it and the meanings each animal or character had. With coloring and placement, it helped me figure out a way to layout my art, both in color and shape, that can move they eye around. Alongside with playing around with a limited color wheel that helped me differ lights and darks.

Personally, my goal as an artist is to make things that I enjoy making, and also put a smile on a face, or a thought in someone’s head. I do think this piece helped me with that because I made sure that the flow of my piece moved the eye to make sure the observer saw everything and gave each detail a thought.

Climbing Wall

April 9, 2021 ASAA

Title of Art Piece: Climbing Wall
Category: Drawing – 2021
Student/Artist’s Name: Anita Koelsch
School: Dimond High School
Grade: 12th
Artist Statement: As I finish up high school and move onto a new chapter, I’ve been reflecting on all the people that have touched my life and shaped me through the years. I’ve used their hands to show the ways that they’ve impacted me. For this piece I wanted to focus on my older brother, who I’ve always considered my best friend and solid rock. He’s kept me grounded over the years, and I know that I’m always able to go to him for advice. I look up to him and his example of strength, and as I transition into college, I know that he’ll continue to guide me over the walls I face. In this piece, I aimed to portray a sense of leadership and strength that offers assurance.

Green Belt: The Speedy Development of Youth as Summer Arrives

April 9, 2021 ASAA

Title of Art Piece: Green Belt: The Speedy Development of Youth as Summer Arrives
Category: Drawing – 2021
Student/Artist’s Name: Kayanna Healy
School: Lathrop High School
Grade: 12th
Artist Statement: My portfolio this year has focused on the Korean martial art Tang Soo Do life cycle stages associated with each belt rank. Green belt represents the speedy development of youth as summer arrives. The mountains mirror the uniform and belt while the river shows the swiftness of development for this rank. The technique is characteristic of the fifth form – a difficult form to master. Growing around the person is the Korean mugunghwa flower plant before it has started to bloom. I chose this flower to be included in my pieces to show the flower lifecycle within the natures of each rank. For instance, in the orange belt piece before green belt, there were little mugunghwa sprouts and now for green belt, they are growing speedily, brown belt will have strongly developed plants, and red belt will have blooming flowers, etc.

Green Belt with a Stripe: Growing Challenge

April 9, 2021 ASAA

Title of Art Piece: Green Belt with a Stripe: Growing Challenge
Category: Drawing – 2021
Student/Artist’s Name: Kayanna Healy
School: Lathrop High School
Grade: 12th
Artist Statement: Tang Soo Do is not only a Korean martial art to practice but also to live by. It is a lifestyle and, in my case, a passion. As I observed the same belt color that was a more advanced rank because it has the white stripe, I investigated the mentality of that stage. Green belt with a stripe represents the speedy development of youth as summer arrives; at this rank, you become more confident in your techniques and are challenged with swiftly learning many difficult or new techniques. I focused on how, mentally, this rank fills your head with a lot of new material so I had the surroundings feel like they were teeming with growth. The clouds are darker than the last piece to show that as rank increases, concepts become more difficult.

Coastal Metropolis

April 9, 2021 ASAA

Title of Art Piece: Coastal Metropolis
Category: Drawing – 2021
Student/Artist’s Name: Haley Boron
School: Haines High School
Grade: 12th
Artist Statement: This piece depicts a birds-eye-view of a bustling cityscape alongside a coastline. The coast and boardwalk are at the top of the page, and the city starts to form as your eye moves down the page. There is a concrete highway that curls through the city, and rays of light shine across the piece from the top right corner of the page. Organic elements in this piece include the crashing waves, seagulls, and foliage. Light and dark values as well as perspective are the main elements of this piece. The tops of the buildings are relatively lighter while the ground, foliage, and streets are almost black in some places. The focal point of perspective is cradled in the “U” shaped building at the bottom of the piece, and the light source is at the top right corner. This piece was created with pen and pencil, and by usage of methodical perspective and fluid stylistic techniques.
The goal of this artwork was to highlight beauty within the urban landscape. For kids who have been born and raised in small rural towns, it is often hard to adjust to the urban setting. I feel that the ability to find the beauty within unfamiliarity is important, as it will help me personally as I go to college. Another goal of this piece was to challenge myself to a very methodical, inorganic way of drawing. The use of orthogonal lines and other rigid perspective techniques is a method that is far out of my comfort zone, and I feel that this piece helped me broaden my artistic skills. As I move forward in my artistic endeavors, I will incorporate more elements of perspective in my pieces.

Self Portrait

April 9, 2021 ASAA

Title of Art Piece: Self Portrait
Category: Drawing – 2021
Student/Artist’s Name: Haley Boron
School: Haines High School
Grade: 12th
Artist Statement: This self portrait was made using value mapping techniques, and was referenced off of a black and white photograph. The subject is looking to the right with a confident smirk, and is defined with a color scheme of yellow, orange, blue, and green. The main elements of this piece that I challenged myself with were the usage of lighting and dramatic contrast. The majority of the face is entirely white, and some subtle yellow values are present around the tip of the nose and right cheek to add more dimension. Contrasting to the white spaces are almost entirely black values in the hair, eyes, and eyebrows. This piece was created so I could find the beauty in my natural self. In the photo of myself that I referenced, I had no makeup on. I drew my features as they were, challenging myself to not do anything that would make me look objectively “prettier” in terms of mainstream societal standards. I feel like I accomplished that goal. This piece not only broadened my artistic capabilities, but also instilled in me a greater confidence in myself.

Title of Art Piece: A War on Drugs
Category: Drawing – 2021
Student/Artist’s Name: Tucker Christiansen
School: Palmer High School
Grade: 12th
Artist Statement: I created this piece as a comment on the treatment of our veterans in America today. Although many veterans in our communities are treated just fine and live happy lives, there are many more that have severe mental and physical disabilities that are overlooked. Specifically, my artwork is meant to bring to attention the drug and addiction crisis created among many veterans by the Veterans Administrations (VAs) across America. Instead of offering programs and activities to veterans with PTSD or other alike disorders/disabilities, many VAs stuff veterans with various pills in hopes that the chemicals will fix them. Addiction and homelessness among our nation’s heroes is a serious problem, and I hope that one day myself or others can help to resolve it.

Best Friend

April 9, 2021 ASAA

Title of Art Piece: Best Friend
Category: Drawing – 2021
Student/Artist’s Name: Avarie Knight
School: West Anchorage High School
Grade: 9th
Artist Statement: This piece is one of my best friend, Addie, and me. The photo was originally taken after we went axe throwing, and it is one of my favorite photos of us together. I made this artwork by first creating an outline in pencil, with all of the highlights and darks of the photo in mind. I then filled every shape with different patterns, five in total, to create value. For my piece, I also wanted to make it even more personal by adding green to the background, which is both of our favorite colors. This piece shows much balance between realism and also eccentricness.

This piece communicates a lot of friendship, it shows how close my friend and I are. I made this artwork to appreciate our friendship, through putting in the effort to make a piece and showcase the importance of the friendship. In my artwork, I usually have a lot of personal connection to whatever I may be creating, and this piece really shows that for me.

My goal for this project was to show who I am, and I believe I really achieved that through showing my personal connections through creativity.
