Interruptions

(1st Place – Ceramics)

Title of Art Piece: Interruptions
Category: Ceramics – 2019
Student/Artist’s Name: Clare Hanneman
School: Lathrop High School
Grade: 12th
Artist Statement:

When I first started designing with geometric shapes I focused mostly on surfaces of pots. With this piece, I was interested in playing with the entire form and exploring how I could break up space with a geometric shape that created positive and negative space. I am happy with how striking the cube is as it interrupts the flow of the pot, and how the deep color of the glaze flows into the contrasting light glaze in the center.

Arizona themed Agateware Set

April 18, 2019 ASAA

(2nd Place – Ceramics)

Title of Art Piece: Arizona themed Agateware Set
Category: Ceramics – 2019
Student/Artist’s Name: Caitlin Sargeant
School: Palmer High School
Grade: 11th
Artist Statement:

Throughout this process of making this set, I combined two different colored clays to create this series of agateware. I colored the blue clay by wedging in Mason stains to a white clay body. I made all pieces light weight and flared the rims to make them more functional. After making each piece I used a metal rib to scrape off the excess clay to show the beautiful swirls within the clay. I experimented with varied sized flutting tools with different designs to expose the layers of colored clay. I hand pulled each handle and placed them accordingly so the weight would be balanced in the user’s hand.

(3rd Place – Ceramics)

Title of Art Piece: Architect’s Teapot
Category: Ceramics – 2019
Student/Artist’s Name: Clare Hanneman
School: Lathrop High School
Grade: 12th
Artist Statement:

I really enjoy the contrasts between geometric shapes and positive and negative spaces in my pots. I wanted this pot to be very angular because I was inspired by some Japenese architecture that I had seen. The richness of layering glazes added to the clean, exacting lines of this piece. I am really pleased with the overall visual impact of this teapot.

Title of Art Piece: Mountain Mug
Category: Ceramics – 2019
Student/Artist’s Name: Landry McGee
School: Eagle River High School

Artist Statement:

In Alaska, community and nature are very prominent. When I create a piece, I want it to have purpose and meaning, and for it to improve someones day when they use it. By bringing the vastness of mountains into handheld piece of ceramics, I tried bring a sense of belonging as someone drinks their coffee, while reflecting and looking out off their porch. With the immense love of mountains and the community we associate with coffee in our state, I feel like this is the best way to bring them together, highlighting the wonder and connection that they both hold…

Nature Embodied in Clay

Title of Art Piece: Nature Embodied in Clay
Category: Ceramics – 2019
Student/Artist’s Name: Brynn Lister
School: Petersburg High School
Grade: 11th
Artist Statement:

I took my inspiration for my art piece from the nature around me. Alaska is surrounded by vivid colors and many different textures. My blue bowl with sharp edges embodies the glaciers and the mountain tops with their sharp edges and gentle blue and white hue. My hushroom bowl focuses more on the forest areas of Alaska with its many different species of plants and animals. Lastly, I took inspiration for my mug by how when humans came to Alaska they had to bring in and incorporate the elements on nature into their lives in order to survive. My pottery pieces tell, in essence the story of Alaska now and long ago when humans first came to this land.

My goal for this piece was to create a functional every day object that makes the viewer want to see and learn more. I took inspiration from the ocean and all of its beautiful aspects, I started with an organic shape that reminded me of the oceans coral. For this project I created small clay bowls and pots as well as animals that I will paint to look like Alebrijes. Both these clay figurines are commonly seen around Mexico the clay bowls and pots can be seen everywhere from candy containers to souvenirs, Alebrijes are seen in more touristic cities and are bought as souvenirs. I wanted to show a chipped abandoned building with clay “bricks”, in Mexico especially where I lived there are a lot of old buildings left from families who couldn’t stay there and left for the US or other places.

Title of Art Piece: Esto es mi Familia
Category: Ceramics – 2019
Student/Artist’s Name: Mauricio Hernandez
School: Thunder Mountain High School
Grade: 11th
Artist Statement:

The reason I made this piece was in appreciation of the historic Greek process—all by hand. This is the main reason I chose to hand build by rolling out clay slabs. At first it was challenging to get the shape I wanted for this piece. I had to keep pulling and hitting the clay until it was where I wanted. That was only for the body, the cone shape at the top was it’s own slab piece that I had to shape as well. One of the bigger challenges was the waiting for the clay to get to the hardness I needed. The reason I chose to paint Poseidon, the god of the ocean, is for my brother who has always been drawn to the ocean. Ares is for my oldest brother. Ares the god of war, always fighting just like my brother attacking his problems head on. Finally, Atlas is for my father. Atlas the Titan is known for holding the heavens upon his shoulders. My father has held my family on his shoulders since the day my brothers and I were born.

These pieces all incorporate a glaze titled “Tide Pool”. This glaze breaks beautifully over fluctuating surfaces. These bowls have a swollen appearance with a recess which represents our extremely fluctuating tide changes. These bowls also represent my growth on the pottery wheel from basic cylinder shapes to representational forms. My technique has developed and these pieces show thin walls, slightly choked opening and delicate foot.

Student/Artist’s Name: Jacob Hammond

What I like about ceramics is the creating. Taking a piece of clay and shaping it and designing it, into something beautiful that I can use. I started out hand building and then moved to the wheel and found a place where I could focus despite the chaos around me. My favorite part is when my pieces come out of the kiln–seeing the end result of a piece I’ve worked hard on. I am calm when I’m working with clay. This series of bowls was created for “Empty Bowls” as a community service project.

Title of Art Piece: Light Facetation
Category: Ceramics – 2019
Student/Artist’s Name: Jasmine King
School: Lathrop High School
Grade: 12th
Artist Statement:

I began working with stacked pots and designing them using several different masking techniques. I liked the visual impact that came through the glazing, but wanted to give the form more structural interest, so I began using the lacing technique of carving through the form to create negative spaces that would allow for a light and airy piece. This particular piece reminds me of the shapes in the ocean that reflect and refract light through the shallow waters.

Title of Art Piece: Dark Water Teapot
Category: Ceramics – 2019
Student/Artist’s Name: Wayne Newman
School: Homer High School
Grade: 12th
Artist Statement:

I developed my skills to make this teapot by using the technique that I learned from making lidded containers and handles for mugs. Taking a rewarding risk with the handle, it becomes the main focus point of the piece and my favorite part of the teapot for two main reasons. First, it gives it a unique look that flows with the rest of the shape making it seem as one, but also it functions very well. A lot of teapots are hard to hold once they are filled but having the place for your finger to fit in helps keep it balanced.

Earthquake Vase

Title of Art Piece: Earthquake Vase
Category: Ceramics – 2019
Student/Artist’s Name: Abbie Johnson
School: Eagle River High School
Grade: 12th
Artist Statement:

Originally, this piece was just another vase, but our tectonic plates had a different idea. The first time this piece broke, somebody tried to pick it up from the top before it was fired. In an attempt to save he vase, I used underglaze to glue the pieces back together. While it was firing in the glaze kiln, a 7.0 earthquake hit. Most of my pieces were broken, yet my vase remained somewhat in tact, I needed to glue the pieces that broke off again, and fix some of the glaze that ad chipped off. While it was waiting to be fired, another person tried to pick it up by the broken part, breaking it a third time. I glued the pieces together once again, and crossed my fingers while it was firing in the glaze kiln. When it came out of the kiln, the three pieces had slid down the side of the vase, each making a contrail of different colored underglaze. Even though it was a very frustrating and tedious process, each setback added character, and I have grown to appreciate unexpected outcomes.

My piece was carefully thought out and created to be lightweight, functional, and appealing to the viewer’s eye. The knob on the lid to my casserole dish was created so it won’t slip out of the user’s hand and is easy to use. The handles are placed directly across from each other to make the dish easy to lift. Title of Art Piece: Landscape of Earth and Sky
Category: Ceramics – 2019
Student/Artist’s Name: Linnaea Alverts
School: Palmer High School
Grade: 12th
Artist Statement:

This wheel-thrown earthenware vase was thrown with Oregon red clay, water etched in the leather-hard stage, and glazed with white and grey cone 06 glaze. This piece was created with the intention of representing the relationship between earth and sky; clay from the earth was used to create a vessel with cloud patterns etched in a landscape design implied by dip-glazing techniques. The mountain portion of the horizon was intentionally left without glaze to expose the raw clay beneath, which further connects the idea of earth and sky.

Student/Artist’s Name: Mauricio Hernandez

Student/Artist’s Name: Linnaea Alverts

Artist Statement:

This wheel-thrown earthenware vase was thrown with Oregon red clay, water etched in the leather-hard stage, and glazed with white and grey cone 06 glaze. This piece was created with the intention of representing the relationship between earth and sky; clay from the earth was used to create a vessel with cloud patterns etched in a landscape design implied by dip-glazing techniques. The mountain portion of the horizon was intentionally left without glaze to expose the raw clay beneath, which further connects the idea of earth and sky.
