Tradition

April 1, 2018 ASAA

(1st Place – Printmaking)

Title of Art Piece: Tradition
Category: Printmaking – 2018
Student/Artist’s Name: Jenna Watson
School: Lathrop High School
Grade: 12th
Artist Statement:

This is a reduction print. I printed each color, and then carved more of my print block, and then printed the next color, etc. The image can no longer be re-created, even though it’s a print, because the original image is forever altered. Thus the print becomes an original. I spent months creating this image. The final touch was to add gold leaf in areas to make reference to Japanese art traditions.

Category: Printmaking – 2018
Student/Artist’s Name: Bailee Petersen
School: Palmer High School
Grade: 10th
Artist Statement:

For my screenprint I decided to use a relevant social justice issue as my inspiration. 1 in 9 highschool age girls experience sexual abuse and I feel very strongly about bringing awareness to this topic through my artwork. I printed on the Palmer High dress code to help bring this national issue to a more local audience.

Little Perfections

April 3, 2018 ASAA

(3rd Place – Printmaking)

Title of Art Piece: Little Perfections
Category: Printmaking – 2018
Student/Artist’s Name: Yzella Miramontes
School: Haines High School
Grade: 9th
Artist Statement:

In my eyes, cats have always existed as the most perfect of creatures. I admire their independence as a pet, not relying solely on the admiration of their owner at all times.

I also have a fondness for books, and the book The Most Perfect Thing: Inside (and Outside) a Bird’s Egg by Tim Birkhead was part of the inspiration for this print. The book presented the idea that eggs are the most perfect, secure thing in nature; because of this belief, I included eggs in my print.

The stem running through the cat-like subject represents the love or the attention of an owner, like a lifeline that the floating eggs around her may latch onto to receive strength. Although, the subject is a cat, the eggs represent the felines, those untamed and domestic; while the main subject that resembles a cat, in fact, is intended to represent humans, on-lookers and owners. The sweater on the female is one of my favorite sweaters, and the one I happened to be wearing when I was sketching the composition for this print.

The composition of this piece is meant to capture the incomparable relationship between cats and themselves, each other, and her.

Sunflowers

April 6, 2018 ASAA

Title of Art Piece: Sunflowers
Category: Printmaking – 2018
Student/Artist’s Name: Julianna Kawakami
School: Juneau-Douglas High School
Grade: 11th
Artist Statement:

This is a monotype. Painting watercolor and gouache on a sheet of acrylic was interesting. I worked on it for several days, and it was frustrating when it dried. It was cool that you could erase things, and move them around, before committing to a print. The paper had to be just the right dampness, soaking overnight, to pull a good print. I even got a good ghost-print!

Title of Art Piece: ?¿?¿
Category: Printmaking – 2018
Student/Artist’s Name: Krysta Walsh
School: Palmer High School
Grade: 11th
Artist Statement:

The intent of my prints was to create a huge message physically while keeping it unknown. This way, the viewer has to stop and think about what’s being presented. Hopefully they are confused and ask themselves, “What is the Big Message?.” My hope is to provoke the viewers’ thoughts and emotions with confusion, curiosity, and frustration. I refuse to define this “Big Message “ considering, everyone has their own.

A Turtle’s Print

Title of Art Piece: A Turtle’s Print
Category: Printmaking – 2018
Student/Artist’s Name: Julinna Timothy
School: Joe Redington Sr Jr/Sr High School
Grade: 10th
Artist Statement:

I chose to create a turtle stamp because I haven’t seen a stamp quite like it before. So I decided to create my own. For the backgrounds, I wanted them to look tropical and give the illusion that the turtle is really swimming.

Title of Art Piece: Anna’s Ananas
Category: Printmaking – 2018
Student/Artist’s Name: Anna Witzke
School: Joe Redington Sr Jr/Sr High School
Grade: 11th
Artist Statement:

The title for my artwork is, “Anna’s Ananas” because I am from Germany and Pineapple is translated to ‘Ananas’ in German. Since I am in Alaska for eight months now and the winter is really long, I realized how much I miss the summer and for me a pineapple symbolizes summer. It is yellow like the sun and just tastes like summer.
