Memory Project

April 1, 2018 ASAA

(1st Place – Painting)
CONGRESSIONAL AWARD

Title of Art Piece: Memory Project
Category: Painting – 2018
Student/Artist’s Name: Amber Rounds-McPherson
School: Thunder Mountain High School
Grade: 11th
Artist Statement:

In this piece (both portraits), I lovingly mixed oil based paints on a thin unstretch canvas, using my arsenal of brushes and fingertips. This portrait was created as a donation to “The Memory Project,” a nonprofit organization that invites young artists to create portraits of children around the world. The subjects of the portraits have faced the unbelievable horrors of violence, disasters, extreme poverty, and neglect. To paint anyone face is an intimate and personal undertaking, hopefully this sharing of art will help the children to feel valued and important, and to know that people around the globe truly care about their wellbeing.

Title of Art Piece: Rejoy
Category: Painting – 2018
Student/Artist’s Name: Sally Carr
School: Palmer High School
Grade: 11th
Artist Statement:

This painting is a part of a series of portraits I am producing. This past year I have been participating in a portrait group and have really taken to the act of painting live models. Being able to see the depth, light, color, and personality of the model is so much more satisfying then from a photo reference. I was honored to paint Rejoy Armamento live this past winter. It is truly an experience to paint an individual with all of their quirks and personality right in front of you. Rejoy was an amazing women her confidence and beauty emanated off of her and I attempted to express that.

A Claustrophobic’s Paradise

April 4, 2018 ASAA

(Honorable Mention – Painting)

Title of Art Piece: A Claustrophobic’s Paradise
Category: Painting – 2018
Student/Artist’s Name: Amorah Lopez
School: Colony High School
Grade: 12th
Artist Statement:
My preferred mediums in art are watercolor, inks, and graphite. I prefer to color my works in watercolor because it works quickly and can be controlled in almost any way one desires. I use ink to outline my watercolor marks, defining shapes, creating details, and adding texture to extenuate the pieces. I also like to use graphite for portraits and more organic looking art.
A concept that I’ve been focusing on most recently is expressing my happiness through memories and imagination. I feel my purpose in life is to be happy, and to make others happy. Because of this a lot of my most recent pieces have been on memories that I think define my most joy-filled moments.
In the future I hope to work in animated film, working with initial design processes such as storyboarding, concept illustration, or character design.

A Ring of Endless Light

April 5, 2018 ASAA

(Honorable Mention – Painting)

Title of Art Piece: A Ring of Endless Light
Category: Painting – 2018
Student/Artist’s Name: Veronica Salter
School: Thunder Mountain High School
Grade: 12th
Artist Statement:

I like to examine a variety of ideas and media while I’m creating something new. Consequently, the concepts I explore while in this process often influence the direction of my creative process. To be frank, the title of my piece was taken in part from my favorite childhood book by Madeleine L’Engle, “A Ring of Endless Light”, a novel that explores the role love and poetry in coming to terms with grief. While I haven’t read “A Ring of Endless Light” in years, I wanted my title to not only reflect my visuals, but the collective influence of media on my art as well. The music, conversations, books, environment, and art that I am exposed to daily influence the art styles and designs that I find attractive and interesting. For example, I’ve read quite a few fantasy and science fiction books in recent years, and the value of discovery and curiosity in these stories has stayed with me. Because of this, in this particular piece –featuring a starry background, gold accents, and a crystal ball–, I wanted to emulate the feeling of being drawn to the mysterious and unknown which in this painting is the creation of myself—complete yet not.

This painting represents that God wants us to be a “light in the dark” and to be constantly running towards Him, striving to be more like Him. On Ice

April 6, 2018 ASAA

Title of Art Piece: On Ice
Category: Painting – 2018
Student/Artist’s Name: Audrey Schick
School: Thunder Mountain High School
Grade: 11th
Artist Statement:

I originally chose several photos of different ducks including the wood duck and mandarin. The canvasback seemed the most beautiful to me. The whole painting started off with a dusky medium tone blue to set the scene, with accents of darker blues to add depth to the background. As depth was being added, white for the snow and ice was added in. I tried to keep the background detailed without being too eye catching. For the watery sand the duck stands on, it was a struggle to get just the right blue! After a while of mixing various amounts of blue with grey and orange, I added green to see what would happen. Just a touch of it was enough. Still took several times to get the right look, however. The back of the duck, where the black meets the white was my favorite part of the painting. The brush gave just the right texture to allow the two shades to meet without being too perfect. In most paintings, it’s important to make the head of your subject your main attraction. While the whole bird is beautiful, it’s head needed the extra umph. The reference I used was perfect because of the blues surrounding the deep, contrasting orange; the slopes in the snow lead you right to it.

Title of Art Piece: Quest
Category: Painting – 2018
Student/Artist’s Name: Jacqueline Conde
School: West Valley High School
Grade: 9th
Artist Statement:

When I originally started this I was a little lost as what to choose for a reference. However, as the Yukon Quest had taken place a few weeks ago I decided to focus on it as my main point of reference. The piece is supposed to be from a dogs point of view, which is why the people are cut off and non-visible to the viewer. In the end this work took around 6-9 hours spread over four days plus extra time to account for sketching. I hope that you enjoy it as much as I did when making it.

Category: Painting – 2018
Student/Artist’s Name: Tianah Sangster
School: Thunder Mountain High School
Grade: 11th
Artist Statement:

This painting is a portrait of myself and my fish, Mozart, who passed away two years ago. I titled this piece Lacrimosa which means “tearful” in Latin. Lacrimosa is part of Requiem Mass, the last piece by the composer, Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart, who wrote it before dying in 1791. The song reveals the mankind’s deepest emotions and fear of death. In this painting, I imagined him swimming along to the song.

Title of Art Piece: The Otter in the Water
Category: Painting – 2018
Student/Artist’s Name: Seth Henning
School: Unalaska City School
Grade: 11th
Artist Statement:

At first I wasn’t motivated with this piece because I couldn’t see the final product. It wasn’t until after most of the layers were put in that I finally saw that it was turning out how I wanted it to. But I didn’t have the patience at first. It took my art teacher to help with that. She kept telling me that “it’s just a base layer” and that you have to keep finding the right shades and texture. Towards the end, I took more time on it because it was actually turning out good and I was getting more realistic textures and shades. I chose to draw a sea otter because they remind me of the ocean. They have unique features and qualities. I am happy with the final product and I found that it takes patience to get where you want to go.

Student/Artist’s Name: Marissa Nilsen
School: Petersburg High School
Grade: 12th
Artist Statement:

Art has always been a way for me to communicate what I can’t say with words…

“self image” is a testimony and a farewell to the past 18 years of my life. Although the painting doesn’t look anything like me, it represents me in all the ways that matter; it reflects what I’ve been through, the sacrifices my family has made, my fondest memories and worst moments, as well as the opportunities and experiences I’ve been able to take advantage of, both living in Southeast Alaska and spending a year abroad in Europe in 2016-17. From the worst of circumstances to the best of experiences, these past 18 years have shaped me into who I am today. It’s impossible for me to put into words how grateful I am for my past, and how excited I am for the future. Where words fail, art speaks.

Rack paintings are meant to represent you as a person, but in art form. I chose the cello, because it represents my body and it is by far my favorite instrument that I have played, but also because underneath everything that is on the outside we are all the same. The chain is wrapped around the cello, because I am a very stable person and I am comfortable and love myself for who I am. The octopus tentacle and camera represent things that I really love, along with the sheets of music in the background.

The inspiration behind my watercolor flower was the bright and vibrant colors in the flower and how the the contrast was shown in the picture but the main inspiration was the way my teacher described it and showed her love for that style of art which then made me want to be able to experience it for myself. The message behind the artwork is that u can always find happiness and joy even when there is sadness all around. The process used to create this artwork was I started out with stretching the watercolor paper then sketched out the proportions of the flower then slowly used the flat wash and wet into wet to layer and create details to bring the flower to life.

Even though she has this title, I only see her for who she is, as a friend. One thing I learned about Haadiya in this project is that she is simple yet complex. I was interested in doing a collage on her because I find her skin tone enchanting and her physique very elegant. Bedsides those attributes, I was really drawn in by the structure of her face and the texture of her hair.

The subjects of the portraits have faced the unbelievable horrors of violence, disasters, extreme poverty, and neglect.

Student/Artist’s Name: Audrey Schick

The Otter in the Water

April 6, 2018 ASAA

Title of Art Piece: Guilt
Category: Painting – 2018
Student/Artist’s Name: Robin Hoyt
School: Palmer High School
Grade: 12th
Artist Statement:

Guilt’s style is inspired by the surrealism and expressionism movements. It represents how guilt feels; like cream-of-mushroom soup, uncomfortable, and full of regret and sorrows. I used a more monochromatic color scheme to make the piece feel more dreary and heavy, and the figure’s posture is depicted as submissive to their own guilt and pain.

For this piece I started of with a photoshoot inspired by Andy Warhol and Geoffrey Jones. The model is a well known person in our school but I wanted the photos to show a more personal side of him. The drastic pink and purple light gives off a sense of femininity. Both elements together represents crumbling stereotypes and expectations that make one vulnerable to society.

Student/Artist’s Name: Jina Malone
School: Palmer High School
Grade: 12th
Artist Statement:

It was my biggest dream as a kid to climb the tallest mountain and drink the clouds. I used that idea to create a piece about empowerment and self-fulfillment. The juxtaposition of the baby head and the adult hand is meant to symbolize achieving your goals using your own devices. I used fantasy colors to support the dreamscape I created. The textural contrast was something I wanted to emphasize, in order to attract the viewer’s eye.

Title of Art Piece: Self Image
Category: Painting – 2018

Student/Artist’s Name: Hailey Holland
School: Joe Redington Sr Jr/Sr High SchoolC

Artist Statement:

Rack paintings are meant to represent you as a person, but in art form. I chose the cello, because it represents my body and it is by far my favorite instrument that I have played, but also because underneath everything that is on the outside we are all the same. The chain is wrapped around the cello, because I am a very stable person and I am comfortable and love myself for who I am. The octopus tentacle and camera represent things that I really love, along with the sheets of music in the background.

Blue Watercolor Flower

Title of Art Piece: Blue Watercolor Flower
Category: Painting – 2018
Student/Artist’s Name: Shayna Madruga
School: Palmer High School
Grade: 11th
Artist Statement:

The inspiration behind my watercolor flower was the bright and vibrant colors in the flower and how the the contrast was shown in the picture but the main inspiration was the way my teacher described it and showed her love for that style of art which then made me want to be able to experience it for myself. The message behind the artwork is that u can always find happiness and joy even when there is sadness all around. The process used to create this artwork was I started out with stretching the watercolor paper then sketched out the proportions of the flower then slowly used the flat wash and wet into wet to layer and create details to bring the flower to life.

For this collage I was inspired by good friend Haadiya Cheema who happens to be the valedictorian of my school (Service High School) for class of 2018.

This painting was inspired by my curiosity and social media. For a while now I have been thinking about the process of making an acrylic pour. The project materials surprised me. I always imagined to make a pour painting, you just dump a bunch of acrylics on a canvas but now I know there is so much more that goes into it. This piece consists of silicon and latex based floetrol assisted by acrylics. The results of my painting are exciting and cosmic.
