Category: Communication Arts / Graphic Design – 2018
Student/Artist’s Name: Claire Scott and Josephine Engstrom
School: Juneau-Douglas High School
Grade: 9th
Artist Statement:

I developed these characters to represent different cultural interests: my favorite era in history, Victorian, my favorite exotic culture, Japanese, a traditional culture of my family, Billy the Kid and the Wild West, and current Pop-culture, represented by a Kardashian taking a selfie. They share a common element of fitted armor. It is done in alcohol markers.

Student/Artist’s Name: Joscelyn Hoppe

Mercorpse, she is very cool looking. I created her with sharp teeth because in the versions I have read about mermaids, they had sharp teeth to eat their victims and were similar to sirens; but they were different of course, they didn’t lure their prey in.

Happy Otter

April 6, 2018 ASAA

Title of Art Piece: Happy Otter
Category: Communication Arts / Graphic Design – 2018
Student/Artist’s Name: Cameron Okins
School: Thunder Mountain High School
Grade: 12th
Artist Statement:

This photo was created in illustrator using a polyart technique, using darker colors to represent depth. I originally made this photo with the intention of creating a piece that represented Alaska and it’s culture. The diversity of wildlife and the open ocean is what Alaska is known for, making the otter an excellent representation of this.

Revival

April 6, 2018 ASAA

Title of Art Piece: Revival
Category: Communication Arts / Graphic Design – 2018
Student/Artist’s Name: Blue Dunsworth
School: Valdez High School
Grade: 9th
Artist Statement:

I have always enjoyed Eminem’s music. His ability to tell a story through music has always inspired me, and with his recent album release, I wanted to convey his situation through a picture; to almost tell a story like he can. My illustrations shows Eminem himself resting on a stool with an american flag projected on him. He has a disappointed look on his face. I wanted to show his disappointment in America with all of the shootings and disputes that he has expressed this in his music. It is essentially a message reminding people that there are bad things happening in America.

Shoot for the Moon

April 6, 2018 ASAA

Title of Art Piece: Shoot for the Moon
Category: Communication Arts / Graphic Design – 2018
Student/Artist’s Name: Kat Barr
School: Colony High School
Grade: 10th
Artist Statement:

The theme for this project was “show what you see in your future” To be honest, I hate the future, the thought startles me; I don’t know who I will be, where I’ll be, I don’t know anything. It seems so uncontrollable and the possibility of failure is extreme. . . yet, so promising. I had no idea what to do with this project then a saying came to me which has been with me for so long “Shoot for the moon and if you miss you’ll land among the stars.” That’s how I see the future we want the best for ourselves; to get the best job, place to live, grades etc. But even if we don’t get the best in life you will still make it. Personally, the saying means a lot to me as I put so much pressure on myself to succeed and I don’t get all A’s and be the “best child” I’m a failure, that’s well. . . not true. Because in the end I may not be on the moon but I will still be among the stars. That is the meaning behind this piece.
