No Looking Up

April 1, 2017 ASAA

(1st Place – Graphic Design)

Title of Art Piece: No Looking Up
Category: Communication Arts / Graphic Design – 2017
Student/Artist’s Name: Madeline Ko
School: Palmer High School
Grade: 12th
Artist Statement:

This piece is set in a busy city and gives a visual marker for the focus of all of the people’s attention. The lack of eye contact and positioning away from the viewer makes them feel ignored and, in turn, inclined to return to their own devices. I was influenced by my own experiences traveling in cities, and street artists like “iHeart” who have also criticized society by exaggerating their generation’s social issues through art.

TMHS Falcons

(2nd Place – Graphic Design)

Title of Art Piece: TMHS Falcons
Category: Communication Arts / Graphic Design – 2017
Student/Artist’s Name: Sonny Mauricio
School: Thunder Mountain High School
Grade: 12th
Artist Statement:

This is the 2016 – 2017 yearbook cover for TMHS. This is also my third and final cover that I will have created for TMHS. Our theme this year is “Space” so I was challenged to design a creative cover that fit our theme. The design was created using programs Photoshop and Cinema 4D. Please, note, this is NOT a photograph. This is an original piece created by me from scratch. Along with the creation of the cover, I screen recorded the entire design process. You can watch the speed art by scanning the cover with the Aurasma app and following the “2017 TMHS Yearbook” channel. The total recording time was eight hours. I had to render the speed art three times in order to compress the video down to two minutes. I thought it would be interesting to have the students and staff watch the creation of my final yearbook cover for Thunder Mountain High School.

Artwork Dimensions: 8×10

Crystaline Cetacea

April 10, 2017 ASAA

Title of Art Piece: Crystaline Cetacea
Category: Communication Arts / Graphic Design – 2017
Student/Artist’s Name: Tehya McLeod
School: Lathrop High School
Grade: 11th
Artist Statement:

I created this piece inspired by the fractured/ geometric trend in art that breaks down the form of an animal into triangles or other shapes. I decided to put my own twist on the trend by sketching an orca that was transforming into crystals versus basic geometric shapes. It was then scanned and manipulated digitally with graphic design in mind.

Queen Vögel

April 10, 2017 ASAA

Title of Art Piece: Queen Vögel
Category: Communication Arts / Graphic Design – 2017
Student/Artist’s Name: Kacie Myers
School: Ben Eielson High School
Grade: 12th
Artist Statement:

I am working toward becoming a game-concept artist and developer. I have spent the past two years mapping out a plotline for a game that I hope to create in the future. This image is the concept art for the main character, Queen Vögel. Queen Vögel is a large cockatiel-esque goddess to the Rigars, a race of bird-based creatures that serve as the primary inhabitants of her world. Wielding her ancient church bell and its infinite chain as her weapon, Queen Vögel’s goal is to save her kingdom from the Rigar titan, Lord Pompeii. I used a computer program called Paint Tool SAI and a drawing tablet to create this digital image.

Student/Artist’s Name: Rylee Stanton

Artist Statement:

The objective of this piece was to create a sense of unity between people and animals. To bring in focus into the artwork, I chose only one jelly fish to stand out with the color orange. I also used the jelly fish to create movement in the piece. While drawing this, I kept in mind to use warm tones to help keep the piece unified. I used “Clip Studio Paint” to create this image.
