Different Attention

April 5, 2016 ASAA

MG_7936

Title of Art Piece: Different Attention
Category: Sculpture – 2016
Student/Artist’s Name: Jheaniquea Lucero
School: Palmer High School
Grade: 12th
Artist Statement: I made this multiples art piece that is similar to Antony Gormley’s The Field. The central figure is being judged. The figures in the crowd are the judgers. In the crowd, the people with arms are spreading rumors or making upset gestures. The other shapes without arms are the listeners; they listen to the ‘arms’ and judge the center person. This piece is based on the alienation people feel who are homosexual and transgendered. I chose clay to give two different views, birds-eye and ground level, because the work is three dimensional. The dark red symbolizes hatred or anger. The pink represents transgender identity and the rainbow refers to gay/lesbian sexuality.

Category: Sculpture – 2016
Student/Artist’s Name: Isaac Guge

Artist Statement: This piece of artwork was created to represent the desensitization of the destruction of nature. The dead rose placed in the hand represents the damage that we are causing to nature. The white hand represents mankind and the thought behind making the hand white was to represent how mankind has become alienated from nature. The reason that the tips of the fingers are broken off is to represent desensitization of the damage we are doing to nature.

Category: Sculpture – 2016
Student/Artist’s Name: Ian Priest
School: Lathrop High School
Grade: 11th
Artist Statement: I am inspired to make creature sculptures that make people feel uncomfortable. I like to sculpt with parts and pieces that look sweet and others that seem twisted. Burning the Wick at Both Ends

April 5, 2016 ASAA

burning-the-wick-at-both-ends

Title of Art Piece: Burning the Wick at Both Ends
Category: Sculpture – 2016
Student/Artist’s Name: Noemi Ochoa
School: Homer High School
Grade: 11th
Artist Statement: The name of this piece is burning the wick at both ends. I got the idea from observing busy people’s characteristics. Buggy eyes, premature wrinkles and the hollowness of the head represents spacefulness. In the end, it represents over-working yourself. The bust is made out of clay. I spray painted it back after it was bisque fired. Then I used pastels and brightly colored chalk to accent the features. A real wax candle and a battery operated light were installed in the head lastly.
