The Totem Web

April 18, 2016 ASAA

TotemPole
(1st Place – Multicultural Art)

Title of Art Piece: The Totem Web
Category: Multicultural Art – 2016
Student/Artist’s Name: Charles McAndrews
School: Thunder Mountain High School
Grade: 12th
Artist Statement: This is a symbol of Tlingit culture with a flower and fish symbolizing their life.
I took a picture of a totem pole and then traced it in Adobe Illustrator. I cut the outline multiple times and then used a tool called the “Blend Tool” in Adobe Illustrator to add multiple lines in between the outline. I added a gradient to make the totem pole more three-dimensional. I repeated this with the salmon, and used the rotation tool to make it spin. I outlined a flower and put it behind the totem pole.
Artwork Dimensions: 8×8

Nikki1

Title of Art Piece: Seal Skin Fur Beaded Bracelet
Category: Multicultural Art – 2016
Student/Artist’s Name: Nikki Kim
School: East Anchorage High School
Grade: 10th
Artist Statement: Making this project reminded me of when I was younger and living in the village. Making the bracelet was fun. I enjoy sewing and beading so it all worked out. The medium is seal fur, beads, and string. I used black and white beads because those colors fit in with the seal’s fur color. I hope people notice how much value one item can contain. I worked within my teacher’s classroom under the guidance of guest Tlingit artist Shaaxsaani.
