Birch Wind Chimes

April 16, 2016 ASAA

Bradan1
(3rd Place – Ceramics)

Title of Art Piece: Birch Wind Chimes
Category: Ceramics – 2016
Student/Artist’s Name: Bradan Tobin
School: Eagle River High School
Grade: 12th
Artist Statement: Trying to obtain inspiration and ideas in pottery has led to a new confidence in creating balance and unity in my work. As an artist, my experimentation with thrown ceramics has significantly expanded my variety and originality. An outcome of this process is that I feel a genuine balance between nature and pottery. This piece, Birch Wind Chimes, conveys the unity I have set out to achieve in my work. What I really enjoy about this piece is that it relies solely on nature to function. I took time to measure out the holes drilled, the square birch bark mounts, the strings, the size of the clay cylinders and strips, and the particular heights at which they hang. The combination of the natural wood products and the hand crafted products work in concert to create a fully functional wind chime. The sound it makes is beautiful and it is satisfying as an artist to watch a piece develop into something that you are so proud of.
As a senior in high school, I am so grateful that art programs are a choice for any student who wishes to risk being creative. It has given me a place for growth, experimentation, successes, and failure. These ideals are key for any environment, and have taught me to be flexible and learn from my mistakes. Now that I am considering myself an artist, it gives me a great amount of respect for others works. I know that the planning and choices made are difficult tasks. Ask any artist and they will tell you that they love what they do and I can assure you that I love what I get to do every day.

Age Before Beauty

Mikaela1

Title of Art Piece: Age Before Beauty
Category: Ceramics – 2016
Student/Artist’s Name: Mikaela O’Hare
School: Eagle River High School
Grade: 12th
Artist Statement: My two-faced teapot displays the transition from youth to age in a piece that is both interesting in appearance as well as completely functional. The discussion of age is often laced with distaste, or at least a sense of sobriety. I hoped to address this subject with humor, highlighting the idea that we don’t need to take ourselves and our aging bodies so seriously. Especially living in a society with such a weird obsession over youth and beauty, we must understand that, no matter how old we get or how much our features become distorted, eternal youth can be attained by remaining hopeful and curious in the world around us right up to the very end.

Title of Art Piece: Tentacle Sensation
Category: Ceramics – 2016
Student/Artist’s Name: Kris Redd
School: Lathrop High School
Grade: 12th
Artist Statement: Having lived in Hawaii for 5 years, I have come to love the ocean. I am convinced that if I could live in the sea, I would! This piece was inspired by one of my favorite marine animals. The octopus is an unique and intellectual creature. They are curious beings, so it would not be abnormal to find one exploring an abandoned pot on the ocean floor. That’s why I created this octopus exploring a bowl, instead of just having it stand independently. I hope I have done justice to these amazing creatures!

Artist Statement: Recently I have been able to work with porcelain, and I’ve really enjoyed what this clay body has allowed me to explore. I’ve made a series of vases that challenged my wheel throwing skills. This is one of my favorites, because it’s very light for such a large vessel, and it has a very pleasing form. I really like the marbled effect from using red clay with the porcelain body, and I think the glazing really completed this piece.

Age Before Beauty

April 5, 2016 ASAA

I also mixed dish soap and blue glaze to create an interesting blue mark in the center of the bowl. The drips ran as I had hoped and it turned out very well in my opinion.

Student/Artist’s Name: Flurina Boslough
School: West Anchorage High School

Artist Statement: This work was inspired by the remnants of sea urchins that can be found along beaches. I have always been amazed by the simplistic beauty of nature, and the minute beings that live on this earth. As a result, I mimicked the form of a dead urchin, the circles an indication of where prickly spikes once stood.

Student/Artist’s Name: Sara Novy
School: Lathrop High School
Grade: 12th
Artist Statement: Recently I have been able to work with porcelain, and I’ve really enjoyed what this clay body has allowed me to explore. I’ve made a series of vases that challenged my wheel throwing skills. This is one of my favorites, because it’s very light for such a large vessel, and it has a very pleasing form. I really like the marbled effect from using red clay with the porcelain body, and I think the glazing really completed this piece.

Artist Statement: I came to Alaska 10 years ago, and I have always been inspired by its majestic beauty. When I was little, I would anticipate traveling from Fairbanks to Denali to admire nature and the wildlife within the National Park. Alaska has also inspired me to pursue a career in Environmental Biology. I felt that I needed to give something back to the land that has given me so much. So I present Denali Sunrise as a tribute to what intrigues me most: Wild Beauty.

Category: Ceramics – 2016
Student/Artist’s Name: Brittney King
School: Juneau-Douglas High School
Grade: 12th
Artist Statement: Finding a whole urchin shell on the beach is such a treasure because the are so delicate and fragile. I created this to communicate that rare beauty, working to make it thin and hallow, emphasizing the mysterious hole where there once was a living creature. Applying the texture took patience. I chose the glaze carefully to show off the texture, and I expected it to be more green. I really like the rivulets of brown, though.
