The Prey

C.-Jensen
(1st Place – Painting)

Title of Art Piece: The Prey
Category: Painting – 2015
Student/Artist’s Name: Cameron Jensen
School: Palmer High School
Grade: 12th
Artist Statement: In my piece, “The Prey,” I illustrate a scene of conflict as a mountain lion is trying to reach her cubs, when a lone hunter crosses her path. I created this piece using oil paint, of which I experimented with for the first time. I was inspired by the techniques of Daniel Gerhartz, and other painters who use visible brush strokes and a painterly style. I mainly focused on contrast by using the complementary colors orange and blue, each created by two different light sources in a dark environment.

Artist Statement: The piece was inspired by the tranquility of the sea, and the repetitive ebb and flow of the waves that are like a heartbeat. The woman reading displays the peace and serenity that the ocean can bring to us, as she is in a total state of relaxation. Title of Art Piece: Relatively Major
Category: Painting – 2015
Student/Artist’s Name: Merryn Daniel
School: West Anchorage High School
Grade: 11th
Artist Statement: This painting is part of my IB Art portfolio for a high school class, which has a focus on human anatomy transforming into inanimate objects. This piece, a human spine morphing into piano keys, was inspired by the necessity of music in my life. Just like a spine, piano is an integral part of my being. I believe the idea within this painting, the importance of music, applies not only to me, but to anyone who has a deep connection to music. K.-Reed

Title of Art Piece: Going Out
Category: Painting – 2015
Student/Artist’s Name: Karen Reed
School: Palmer High School
Grade: 12th
Artist Statement: This portrait of a couple is about young, idyllic love. A natural setting is used to create a mood of peace and underpins the beauty and primal nature of love. Bright, warm colors mimic the innocence and joy of the couple which is further expressed through the gentle embrace and facial expressions of the couple. While perfectly content, the couples themselves are not perfect, showing their individuality and imperfections which are part of human nature. An influence of this piece is Arnolfini Marriage by Jan van Eyk. The proportions of the couple were drawn through observation with the aid of a reference photo without the use of a projector or grid system.

Title of Art Piece: Hunger
Category: Painting – 2015
Student/Artist’s Name: Leona Sawyer
School: North Pole High School
Grade: 11th
Artist Statement: My inspiration for this painting was political and world problems. I chose to have a green background to represent wealth and prosperity since a large part of the world is wealthy. The starving children are reaching out to a wealthy world who ignore them. I made their faces very plane since most people do not really know that there are children starving like this. They are the faceless.

RALPH

Title of Art Piece: Happy, Lucky
Category: Painting – 2015
Student/Artist’s Name: Margaret May
School: North Pole High School
Grade: 11th
Artist Statement: This painting was inspired by my lovely sister, who lives near Grand Teton National Park. She photographs and sends often images of the incredible wildlife and scenery which surround her. She is especially fascinated by groups of snow-covered bison; with their unique and entertaining facial expressions and strikingly large stature.
The main bison depicted, affectionately dubbed Ralph, provided an excellent opportunity to explore new methods of color, texture, and technique.
This work, painted and gifted to my sister for Christmas 2014, is titled “Happy, Lucky” for how I, the artist, felt when I was given the opportunity and the experience of doing something positive and constructive for a much loved member of my incredible family.

Title of Art Piece: Pseudo-Self
Category: Painting – 2015
Student/Artist’s Name: Jori Reynolds-Dovell
School: East Anchorage High School
Grade: 12th
Artist Statement: In naming this piece, I had to think long and hard. The first question I broached within myself was, “What does this piece of art I have created mean to me?” I took the picture I used as a reference at the bus stop with no prior thought or intention to create art. If I was being totally honest, it didn’t mean much to me. Not enough for the naming process to be easy for me. But I had created this piece, and put a part of myself into it. The piece deserved a name. Once I named it Psuedo Self, I found it meant more than I’d originally thought. With the amount of layering and redesign I’d done, it held a shroud of mystery. A light-eyed, smiling girl with no connections to reality, I found I related to the piece more than I did the face I saw in the mirror every day.

Title of Art Piece: Ambers Truth
Category: Painting – 2015
Student/Artist’s Name: Amber Bennett
School: Service High School
Grade: 12th
Artist Statement: Creating art is my ultimate escape from the daily stresses and struggles of this adventure many call life. Ever since I can remember, I have loved art and color. Something about color, whether I’m simply observing color, wearing color, or working with color, sparks some sort of motivational force within me. I am my own worst enemy when it comes to creating things. I have always been very doubtful in my ability to use color in a way I can feel positive about. In my experience with creating art, I’ve never successfully been able to recreate myself on any sort of medium, until this piece. Creating this portrait allowed me to separate myself from all of the negative energy that manifests when I regularly make art. I wanted to look at my first self portrait and be able to absorb positive energy for once. Working with color has allowed me to put all of the self deprecating thoughts and negative energy I have aside, long enough to create something I can feel positive about.

The title — Relatively Major — is a reference to a music term but also implies the message conveyed by the painting.

I used different types of brushes to get different lining and shading. My favorite part about this painting is the grass because it reminds me of fall.
